Prep Baseball Report

Harvey Baseball Academy: LHP Analysis

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

On Friday February 9th, The Harvey Baseball Academy invited Prep Baseball Report into their facility to run a Scout Day with the pitchers in their program.  Over twenty pitchers were in attendance where they threw a controlled bullpen for PBR staff.  Each pitcher updated his PBR Profile with a head shot and stats from the day.  Select pitchers will receive a full evaluation and video to their profile.

In the controlled bullpens, each pitcher threw out of the wind-up and stretch.  Players are beginning to get ramped up for their spring season, but many are still building arm strength and their pitch counts.  The Harvey Baseball staff scripted the bullpens to ensure the players stayed in their normal routines.

Left Handed Pitcher Analysis

Andy Cook LHP / OF / Hickory Christian Academy, NC / 2019

Lanky, thin frame with projection left as he continues to add strength to a 6-foot-4, 175 pound frame.  Repeats slot, showing feel for the zone with an ability to move the fastball in and out.  Fastball sat 77-80, touching 81.  Easy, repeatable delivery.  Tall through balance, staying level, landing on-line and square.  Average to above arm speed from a long arc, getting to a high-3/4 slot.  Change-up works with near fastball hand speed, creating fade to the arm side at 70-72.  Attacked the zone with the change.  Breaking ball sat 68-70 with 2/8 shape, repeating the fastball window.

Jacob Lentz 1B / RHP / Statesville, NC / 2020

Average frame in a sturdy 6-foot-3, 200 pound build.  Works with some effort, staying level and landing across his line.  Long arm action bottoms out slightly prior to the elbow working above the shoulder line in getting to a high-3/4 release.  Fastball ranged 67-69, around the zone.  Change-up is straight at 62-64 out of a near fastball hand speed.  Occasionally cut it and was around the zone.  Breaking ball sat 55-58 with gradual, early action.  Arc and spin differed pending the timing of the arm.  Control continually improved throughout the session.

Landon Leonard LHP / 1B / Lake Norman, NC / 2020

Average 6-foot-1, 150 pound frame with room to continue to add strength.  Occasional run to the arm side from a fastball ranging 73-75, around the zone.  Works level, fighting for rhythm, landing square.  Long arm stroke has some effort as it works to find the slot and release from a high-3/4 fashion.  Change-up sat 72-73, mimicking fastball.  Straight, around the zone, misses were down and on-line.  Breaking ball ranged 67-70 with 2/8 tilt.  Inconsistent in the early season bullpen, it does work from fastball hand speed, with a feel for the zone.

Bryce Masters LHP / OF / Hough, NC / 2018

Passes the “eye test” with length in a 6-foot-6, 210 pound frame.  Stretch only.  Some effort working level, landing slightly across his line, and falling toward 3B on release.  Tall through balance, long arm action works through some stiffness for average arm speed and a high-3/4 release.  Fastball 74-76, with run to the arm side, around the zone.  Change-up has run, mimicking fastball through release at 69-73.  Pulls off the breaking ball at times, ranging 57-61, working for downer action with decent hand speed.  Throughout the early season pen, showed advanced feel for the arm side, while fighting the slot to get to glove side.

Noah Phelps LHP / OF / Hickory Ridge, NC / 2019

Thin at 5-foot-10, 140 pounds.  Plenty of maturation left.  Fastball plays with sink at times, ranging 74-76.  In the zone, misses were elevated.  Breaking ball works from slightly slower arm speed, with inconsistent tilt, occasionally moving more side-to-side at 58-59.  Change-up both cut and fade at 70-71.  Shows feel for the zone with the change.  Some effort, working level and on-line, with a heel-to-toe strike that is closed.  Long arm action fights through the elbow working above the shoulder line.  High-3/4 slot and average arm speed.

Brycen Turcotte LHP / OF / Bandys, NC / 2020

Young, thin frame.  At 5-foot-10, 137 pounds there is a lot of maturation ahead.  Average balance point, loading the front hip with the leg kick, swings the leg out as the arm action reaches.  Long arm action has some effort with an over-the-top release.  Lands slightly open, with the toe strike open as well.  Fastball ranges 73-75, cutting at times as the front side leaked.  Decent feel for a change-up sitting 63-68 with occasional fade.  Breaking ball wants 12/6 shape, rolling out of the hand.  Arm slows at times producing average spin at 62-64.

Matthew Upchurch

Matthew Upchurch LHP / OF / Lincoln Charter, NC / 2019

Athletic presence, with length in the limbs.  Listed at 6-foot, 170 pounds with room to add strength.  Tall to balance, loading the backside as he reaches for his landing, with the shoulders creating uphill leverage.  Throws a lot of strikes with some movement in the delivery.  Fastball sat 80-82.  Slider over curveball but both serve a purpose.  Slider ranged 69-74 with late darting side-to-side action.  The curveball wants downer action, occasionally rolling out of the hand in the early season bullpen, sitting 61-63.  Change-up is straight with occasional run at 65-67.  Occasionally slows the arm.

Jeremiah Wike LHP / OF / Fred T Foard, NC / 2019

Thin 5-foot-10, 140 pounder.  Quick twitch is present.  Tall through balance, loading the backside out of balance, working level, landing on-line with a slightly open toe at foot strike.  Long, loose arm action works with a quick hand through a high-3/4 release.   Fastball is firm, pounding the down zone at 80-83.  Breaking ball has consistent shape with 2/8 tilt.  Sharp at 63-66 with a feel for the zone.  Change-up is third pitch at 70-72.  Around the pitch, slowing the arm, and occasionally cutting it as he tends to push the pitch through release.
