A one out walk followed by a hit batter, a fielders choice that did not result in an out and an infield error plated the game's only run in the top of the first inning. West Chester Rustin right-hander Chris McMahon, a Miami recruit ranked No. 1 in the PA Class of 2017, made that run stand up tossing a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts. In front of more than 20 scouts evaluating him as a potential high round draft pick in the upcoming MLB Draft, McMahon did not allow a ball to leave the infield and was within two walks of a perfect game.
Bishop Shanahan starter Nick O'Day, a Texas Christian commit ranked No. 8 in the PA Class of 2018 (4 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 6 K, 6 BB), battled through some control issues and worked out of two bases loaded jams before handing the ball off to Matt Thomas after four innings of hitless baseball. Thomas worked the final three innings without allowing a hit while striking out one batter to complete the combined no-hitter.
The dual no-hitter was not free of action. While Shanahan failed to score a run they did get a runner to second base in the 1st inning when Dan DiBeneditto worked one of his team's two walks with one out. He advanced to second on a stolen base but was stranded when McMahon induced an infield pop up and got a strikeout for the final out of the inning.
Shanahan went without another base runner until the 7th inning as McMahon retired 18 in a row, nine by strikeout. P.J. Heintz, #29 in the PA Class of 2018, worked a 3-2 walk with one out in the 7th to break the string and was replaced by courtesy runner Matt Samson. Samson was cut down attempting to steal by Rustin catcher Sean Hopkins and McMahon then polished off his no-hitter and complete game shutout with his 10th strikeout.
