Chipola Fall Classic: Standouts
September 27, 2019
The Chipola Fall Classic was held Friday, September 13th through Sunday, September 15th at Chipola College. PBR Florida was in attendance to cover the event. Today, we take a look at some of the standouts from the 2019 Chipola Fall Classic.
Standouts
A true utility player this year as he’s listed as a left-handed pitcher, first baseman and outfielder for Chipola, Grey really stood out at the plate and on the mound. He shows the ability to mix pitches and change speeds as he kept hitters off balance and attacked the strike zone with an 80-82 mph fastball and a low 70s breaking ball that really came out of the same slot as the fastball. At the plate the 6’4” 195 lb lefty sits in his legs pre pitch and uses those long limbs to create torque for bat speed and his athleticism and hand eye coordination keep him on the barrel more times than not.
Hines is an uber athletic catcher and right handed hitter. Behind the plate, the hands are soft as he receives the ball well and works together with the feet showing a quick, but controlled transfer with a strong and accurate arm. No different at the plate as Hines brings a high level of confidence to his game. He’s very quick twitch and can catch up to most fastballs but he also has the discipline to sit back and see pitches out of the hand for good plate discipline. He’s stays behind the baseball and takes what’s given to him showing a mature approach with line drive contact.
Franco Aleman, RHP, St. John's River
At 6 foot 6 235 pounds, Aleman is the prototypical pitching prospect in today’s game. In fact, the junior college world should be lucky to have him this year as he could become a household name by next June. Aleman showed power in his big frame as he blew hitters away, coming right after them with an imposing mid 90s fastball and snapping off a low 80s sharp breaking ball. The delivery is almost effortless as his big frame and body should allow him to maintain a starters workload throughout a season. Aleman is as much of a can’t miss prospect as there is out there right now and he will be a fun one to watch this upcoming spring.
