Carolina Rays Scout Day: Quick Hitters

On Monday October 10th PBR of South Carolina was on hand at Coastal Carolina University for a scout day with Carolina Rays. The scout day featured players from the 2020-2029 grad classes.
The morning started with catchers going through a defensive evaluation then pitchers throwing a controlled bullpen with Trackman collecting data analytics. After the bullpens position players ran a laser timed 60 followed by BP on the field with Trackman collecting ball flight data. After BP outfielders and infielders went through a defensive evaluation.

Quick Hitters
5-11 186 pound athletic frame. Hits from a balanced upright stance with a flat stroke down through the ball. Showed a good line drive approach with a max exit velo of 94.3 mph on the day with a max distance of 363 feet. Behind the plate showed an advanced feel to receive with good hands and manipulate the ball. Clean exchange and arm strength on throws to 2B.
6-0 165 pound lean frame with room to add on. Left handed hitter with a lower hand setup in stance but with a controlled load to good hitting position. Has good looseness in hands with swing. Max exit velo of 85.4 mpg with a max distance of 279 feet while showing a line drive approach. On the mound had good clean mechanics with a short arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Fastball was up to 78 mph with an avg spin at 2271 rpm. Also showed a feel for a slider and changeup as well.
6-1 160 pound lean athletic frame with room to grow. Hits from a simple setup with balance and a medium leg lift and stride. Shows a smooth clean bat path through the ball while spray line drives with his approach with 67% of swings resulting in linedrives. Max exit velo of 87.2 mph with a max distance of 298 feet. On the mound showed a smoothed controlled tempo delivery with good direction down the mound with a loose athletic arm swing while throwing from 2 different arm slots. A high ¾ slot along with dropping down to a side arm action while getting good run a sink of the ball.
5-9 180 pound strong frame. Hits from a tall and narrow stance with a big coil in to get loaded up. Creates a flat path above the ball while producing a max exit velo of 80.8 mph and a max distance of 222 feet. Behind the plate while throwing from a RKD stance was able to show a clean exchange with accurate throws. Arm strength will continue to increase as he grows and matures.
A 5-11, 165-pound young man with a wiry, athletic physique and plenty of space to grow. A balanced, rhythmic, athletic stance. has a quick bat and a nice swing. Solid line drive gap to gap approach while not trying to do too much. Shows excellent catch and throw abilities from behind the plate when playing defense. High-level receiver with soft hands, quick transfers, agile feet, and accurate arm strength with pop times on the day from 1.85-2.09 with 80 mph arm strength.
5-9, sturdy frame, 175 pounds. Hits while standing upright and placing weight on the back leg. Small leg lift leading to a balanced medium stride. possesses a strong, whippy swing and an aggressive stance in the box. Behind the plate demonstrates the capacity to be a top receiver with excellent hands who can truly catch the ball out front. strong arm development and good footwork. Has continued to impress since seeing at the JR Future Games.
Matthew Mitchell, 2024, RHP/OF
5-11 170 pound athletic frame. Hits from a simple setup with a balanced stance and a short stride and a toe tap load. A good line drive approach with a max exit velo of 88.5 mph and a max exit distance 286 feet. On the mound has a smooth athletic delivery with good direction down the mound from a ¾ arm slot. Fastball was up to 82.2 mph with an average spin 1868 rpm with some run and sink. Changeup showed good fade and sink up to 76.8 mph with an avg spin at 1363 rpm.
6-3 200 pound lean athletic frame with present strength. Switch hitter that hits from a tall narrow stance from the right side and a bit wider and slightly open from the left. Shows good bat speed and power in the bat with a slightly uphill swing path with a max exit velo of 98.9 mph and a max distance of 357 feet. On the mounds shows a good athletic delivery and loose quick arm from a low ¾ slot. Max fastball up to 90.1 mph and an average spin at 2318 rpm. Good slider with late sharp break at 81.6 mph and a max spin at 2875 rpm. Change was firm but showed good sinking action to it at 86.8 mph with an average spin at 1779 rpm.
6-1 161 pound lean frame with plenty of room to add on. On the mound started from a closed balance position with a good coiled leg lift. Worked well down the mound with good direction with a shorter arm swing in the back from a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball was up to 79.5 mph with an average spin of 1943 rpm. Slider spun at an average spin of 1930 rpm with a max velo of 67.5 mph. Change up had good sink and fade.
Connor Pellerin, 2027, RHP/INF
5-7 145 pound young frame. Hits from a balanced wider stance with a medium leg lift and stride. Has a short flat swing while staying above the ball with a max exit velo of 76.8 mph. On the mound showed a very clean delivery with a clean arm action. Threw from a 3/4 arm slot while having great direction down the mound.
5-10 130 pound frame. Hits from a wider balanced stance and slightly open. Uses a leg lift and a medium stride to balance. Works down above the ball while producing a linedrive/ground ball approach with a max exit velo 80.3 mph.
6-0 180 pound athletic frame. Hits from a wider stance, slightly closed with a toe tap load. Works through the ball with good extension and a line drive approach. Had a max exit velo of 91.6 mph and a max distance of 304 feet.
Deri Steiert-Coulture, 2023, INF
6-1 178 pound lean athletic frame with room to grow. Hits from a wider open stance with a medium leg lift and stride to balance. Good flat swing through the ball with good extension out front. Showed a good line drive approach with a max exit velo of 84.1 mph. Defensively showed smooth clean actions while fielding the ball out front and working through the ball. Arm strength from SS up to 79 mph. Showing overall good athleticism around the field while also running a 7.12 60 time.
Zachary Steagall, 2023, LHP/OF
6-0 165 pound lean frame. Left hander with a controlled pace delivery while throwing from a low ¾ slot with a loose quick arm. Fastball shows good run to it with a max velo of 79.1 mph and and average spin of 1939 rpm. Slider showed good spin with horizontal rotation and an average spin of 2426 rpm and a max velo of 67.9 mph. Change up showed good run and sink at 73.8 mph and an average spin at 1529 rpm.
