On back-to-back days in August, PBR hosted the Top Prospect Games and the Top Underclass Games at Campbell’s Jim Perry Stadium.  The Top Underclass Games featured players from the 2021, 2022, and 2023 classes, working out for PBR scouts and close to 20 college programs in attendance.  Position players participated in a full pro-style workout followed by a live scrimmage with pitchers throwing in a controlled environment to the hitters.

The Top Underclass Games saw plenty of high end talent.  Today we look at the primary outfielders and corner infielders.  In the outfielder group, three ran sub-7.20 and three posted exit velocities above 85 mph.  Two of the corner infielders posted exit velocities at 90 mph or above.

CORNER INFIELDERS

 

Colin Scoggins 3B / 1B / Northern Durham, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 92 / POS: 6   Average frame with strength at 5 foot 10, 180-pounds.  Open setup with a narrow base from the right side.  Small leg kick during the load getting his feet back to even.  Smooth swing and keeps his barrel in the zone.  Has strength and drives the ball to his pull side.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 91 mph.  Drove balls to both side of the field during game action.  Average hands on the infield with some stiffness in the hips.  Accurate arm that topped at 73 mph across the diamond.  Recorded a 7.93 in the 60.

 

 

Joe Valchar 3B / RHP / Heritage, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 66 / POS: 3   Athletic frame at 6 foot 1, 180-pounds.  Sit into his legs with an open setup from the right side.  Short stride getting back to even with his hands working back.  Looks to lift with an uphill bat path.  Works mostly middle to his pull side.  Average to above average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 90 mph.  Fluid feet on the infield with better than average hands.  Funnels to his belt after catch with feel for different arm angles.  Accurate arm with carry to first base that topped at 85 mph.  Recorded a 7.65 in the 60. Stretch only on the mound.  Level and tall with normal effort and some rhythm.  Tall, rolling through balance at times.  Long arm swing, slight hand hook, to a high-3/4 slot with above average arm speed.  Athletic arm, occasionally altering the release point when timing issues were present.  Fastball has arm side run to the arm side.  Fastball ranged 84-87.  Good feel for locating the fastball to the glove side.  Breaking ball has hard, late, sharp tilt with 10/4 arc at 73-74.  Good hand speed and landed the pitch.  Slows the arm a bit, tending to choke the change-up, at 74.

 

 

 

Josh Watson 1B / OF / Christian Academy , SC / 2023   6 foot 2, 226-pound build.  Hits from the right side with a narrow base.  Uses a toe tap during his load with a long stride and his hands working down and back.  Looks to stay in the middle of the field with some feel for his barrel.  Body movement affects his timing at times.  Exit velocity recorded at 86 mph.  Active feet off the bag at first base with average hands.  Clean exchanges with an accurate arm from an over the top slot.  Positional velocity topped at 69 mph.  Recorded a 8.46 in the 60.

 

 

 

 

OUTFIELDERS

 

Daniel Fortuna OF / RHP / Wakefield, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 144 / POS: 24   5 foot 11, 180-pound build.  Hits from the right side with an upright setup with some barrel waggle.  Sinks into his legs during the load with a short stride. Works mostly middle to his pull side during batting practice with average to above average bat speed. Barrel can get in and out of the zone to quickly at times.  Exit velocity recorded at 85 mph.  Plays through balls in the outfield with average hands.  Longer exchange, shuffling into his throws with his arm topping at 83 mph.  Average hands on the infield, playing around the ball with his feet.  Clean transfers, using different arm slots with his throws topping at 77 mph across the diamond.

 

 

Benjamin Gorman OF / RHP / William Amos Hough, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 146 / POS: 25   5 foot 9, 155-pound average build.  Hits from a right side with a balanced setup with his chest, leaning over his feet.  Leg kick during his load with an average stride.  Hands get through the zone with some quickness.  Gap to gap approach with some feel for the barrel.  Average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 82 mph.  Plays through balls in the outfield with average hands.  Clean exchanges with a long arm action, throwing from an over the top slot.  Some accuracy to his throws that topped at 79 mph.  Recorded a 7.52 in the 60.

 

 

Logan Hall OF / LHP / Myers Park, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 118 / POS: 18   6 foot, 160-pound lanky frame with room to add strength.  Balanced setup from the left side of the plate.  Smooth load with his hands working back and a short stride.  Looseness in the swing with a gap to gap approach.  Flatter bat path with average bat speed and feel for his barrel. Exit velocity recorded at 89 mph.  Fluid through balls in the outfield with average hands.  Clean exchanges with a long arm action, throwing from a high ¾ slot.  Some accuracy to his throws that topped at 76 mph.  Recorded a 7.20 in the 60.

 

 

Billy Waldron OF / LHP / Holly Springs, NC / 2022   Athletic at 5 foot 10, 155-pounds.  Thin with room to add strength.  Quickness is present running at 6.88 60.  Hits from the left side with an athletic setup.  Smooth load with an average stride.  Balanced swing with quick hands.  Works gap to gap with a flat barrel path.  Better than average feel for his barrel with his exit velocity recorded at 83 mph.  Tripled to center field during game action.  Plays athletic through balls in the outfield with average hands.  Accurate arm from a high ¾ slot that topped at 79 mph.  Recorded a 4.23 home to first time. Some rhythm on the bump, working level and staying tall through balance.  Closed at balance, landing in-line and square.  Some effort in a long arm action, reaching out of the glove with slight stiffness, working behind the body line with the arm swing.  High-3/4 slot, falling to the 3B side on the finish.  Fastball ranged 77-80.  Good depth and action on the breaking ball.  1/7 late tilt at 67-69.  Created swing and miss in the zone, and chase out of the zone.

 

 

Lefrederick Wooten OF / 3B / East Bladen, NC / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 67 / POS: 9   Athletic at 5 foot 10, 168-pounds.  Hits from the right side with a balanced setup.  Small leg kick during his load.  Quick hands with a flat bat path.  Works mostly middle to his pull side during batting practice.  Has strength in his swing with better than average bat speed.  Drove a ball off the center field wall and hit another ball hard to left during game action.  Plays aggressive on the bases.  Exit velocity recorded at 88 mph.  Accurate arm from the outfield that topped at 91 mph.  Plays through balls with average hands.  Quick feet on the infield working around the ball with average hands.  Accurate arm to first bas that topped at 84 mph.  Recorded a 7.18 in the 60.

 

 

 

Jack Nugent OF / 3B / Central Bucks East , PA / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 33 / POS: 5   Strong build at 5 foot 10, 180-pounds.  Slightly open setup from the right side.  Smooth load with a short stride.  Loose hands with barrel whip through the zone.  Slight uphill bat path with strength to both gaps.  Above average bat speed with his exit velocity recorded at 92 mph.  Works through balls in the outfield with average hands.  Quick transfers to an over the top slot with his arm topping at 75 mph with some accuracy.  Average hands on the infield with his feet working around the ball.  Quick exchange with some accuracy to his throws across the diamond.  Arm topped at 75 mph to first base.  Recorded a 7.35 in the 60.
