AROUND THE HORN: WEEK 8 (April 1-7)

+ No. 7 Hernando Tigers

We knew Hernando could be a serious contender in the newly developed 7A class based on a talented roster heading into the 2024 season. The Tigers began the year at #5 in the Preseason Power 25 and have been inside the top ten ever since. After a 3 game slide in early March they have won 9 of their last 10 and seem to be ready to finish off the regular season strong and head into the playoffs on mission. A big reason for the success of the Tigers lately has been junior Ole Miss recruit Luke Romine. After an injury ended his 2023 season, Romine is back and making it tough on opposing pitchers, hitting .406 with 7 home runs and 30 RBI’s. With several solid arms, led by another Ole Miss recruit in senior Thomas Mitchell, the Tigers have a balanced attack and could go deep into the 2024 postseason.

+ No. 19 Madison Central Jaguars

Madison Central has found their way back into the Power 25 recently and has continued to steadily climb the last few weeks as they have moved into the No. 19 spot in the Week 8 Power Rankings. After a pair of big wins over Tupelo this past week and improving to (17-7) overall, the Jaguars have picked up some momentum here lately. Will Jackson and Chase Russell lead the offensive as they are hitting at the .300 mark this spring and have accumulated majority of the run production for the Jaguars offense with 27 RBI's between the two. Russell along with Gavin Parrow have been crucial pieces on the mound for Madison Central this spring, both arms have combined put together 89.1 of the teams 163.1 innings on the bump. Southern Miss recruit, Chase Russell has also held opposing hitters to a 1.66 BAA and has an ERA at 0.993 on the spring with 74 K's in just 49.1 IP. Expect the Jaguars to continue trending in the right direction with a series against Clinton this week.
