Underclass Games: Outfield Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report Underclass Games took place on Monday, June 29th at Tulane University New Orleans, LA. This event featured 2016, 2017 and 2018 graduates, and acts as an identifier for this summer’s prestigious PBR Future Games powered by Under Armour.

Today we’ll take a look at the top outfielders from the event, including 2018’s Zane Zeppuhar and Slade Bolden.
Let’s take a look at the top outfielders from this year’s Underclass Games:
Top Outfielders
1. Preston Faulkner, OF, Live Oak HS(2017)
A 6-foot, 194-pound outfielder with a strong, physical, athletic frame. Right-handed hitter with a tall, balanced setup, smooth load, leg kick and solid balance throughout the swing. Line-drive type hitter with a gap to gap approach, fluid rhythm throughout that showed exceptional bat speed recording a 91 mph exit velocity. Defensively he showed soft hands, fluid footwork, a quick and clean exchange, played through balls nicely and produced an 86 mph positional velocity from the outfield with a long arm action into a high-3/4 release with accuracy on throws.
2. Zane Zeppuhar, OF, St. Amant HS(2018)
A 5-foot-10, 170-pound outfielder with an athletic, strong frame. Solid defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, solid athleticism with a loose arm out of a high-3/4 slot that produced an 85 mph positional velocity with carry on throws. Left-handed hitter with a tall setup, slight wrap in the load, short stride, explosive lower half, and excellent balance. Shows an in and out type path with a line-drive, opposite field approach, fluid rhythm and solid bat speed that produced an 87 mph exit velocity.
3. Slade Bolden, OF, West Monroe HS(2018)
A 5-foot-11, 183-pound outfielder with an athletic, strong frame. Defensively he showed soft hands, fluid footwork, and a clean exchange in the outfield with a positional velocity of 83 mph with a long arm action, over the top release and accuracy on throws. Right-handed hitter with a balanced, athletic setup with little to no load, short stride and explosive lower half. Shows a short path with quality extension, gap to gap approach with juice to the pull side and quality bat speed that produced an 87 mph exit velocity.

+ Brock Batty, OF, Denham Springs HS(2017)
A 6-foot-1, 175-pound rising junior with a medium, athletic frame. Right-handed hitter with athletic, balanced setup, smooth load, short stride and quick hands. Line-drive type swing with a short, flat path through the zone and fluid rhythm throughout the swing that produced an exit velocity of 84 mph. Solid defensive outfielder with soft hands, fluid footwork, quick and clean exchange, athletic fielding position and quality arm strength with carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 86 mph.
+ Daniel Charbonnet, OF, Pearl River HS(2016)
A 5-foot-11, 175-pound outfielder with an average, athletic, lean frame. Quality defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, plays through balls well and a loose arm into a high-3/4 release with accuracy and arm strength that resulted in an 81 mph positional velocity. Right-handed hitter with balanced setup, short stride, in and out bat path, and opposite field type approach that produced a 78 mph exit velocity.
+ Jamarian Crain, OF, Franklinton HS(2017)
A 5-foot-9, 155-pound outfielder with a small, athletic frame. Quality athlete that displays fast-twitch actions and shows to be solid defensive outfielder with soft hands, fluid footwork and a positional velocity of 78 mph. Right-handed hitter that hits from an athletic, tall, slightly open setup with his hands held at the shoulder. Rotational type swing with a short stride and explosive lower half. Shows an in and out bat path with fluid rhythm, and solid bat speed that recorded an 83 mph exit velocity.
+ Jeffery Elkins, OF, AES HS(2017)
A 5-foot-10, 165-pound outfielder with an average, lean, athletic body. Right-handed hitter that hits from a slight crouch setup with a slight load, leg kick, explosive lower half, and solid balance. Displays a compact, short path with a gap to gap approach and quality bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 86 mph. Solid defensive outfielder with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, plays through well, and solid arm strength out of a mid-3/4 release that produced an 81 mph positional velocity.
+ Ma’Khail Hilliard, OF, Central(BR) HS(2017)
A 6-foot, 145-pound outfielder with a lean, athletic, and projectable frame. As an outfielder showed solid arm strength with a positional velocity of 87 mph with carry and life on throws. Right-handed hitter that hits from a balanced setup, short stride, and solid balance. Displays quality bat speed with a short path and fluid rhythm that produced an exit velocity of 81 mph.
+ Mason Matherne, OF, John Curtis HS(2016)
A 5-foot-10, 175-pound outfielder with an average, strong, athletic frame. Fast twitchy athlete that showed soft hands and fluid footwork in the outfield with a long, over the top arm slot that produced an 84 mph positional velocity. Right-handed hitter with a balanced setup, slight wrap in the load, short stride, and solid balance throughout the swing. Shows a gap to gap approach with quality bat speed that produced a 79 mph exit velocity.
+ Scott McMurrian, OF, Oak Grove(MS) HS(2017)
A 6-foot-1, 185-pound catcher and outfielder with an average, athletic frame. Right-handed hitter that starts from a crouch with little to no load, short stride, solid balance into a rotational type swing. Gap to gap type hitter with a line drive swing that showed solid bat speed recording an 84 mph exit velocity. Quality defensive outfielder that showed soft hands, fluid footwork, quick and clean exchange, and solid arm strength with carry on throws.
+ Nick Webre, OF, Teurlings Catholic HS(2017)
A 5-foot-10, 185-pound outfielder with a strong, athletic frame. Left-handed hitter that hits from an athletic setup with smooth load, short stride, explosive lower half, and excellent balance. Shows a solid bat path with outstanding extension, gap to gap approach with power to the pull side and fluid rhythm that produced an exit velocity of 89 mph. Quality defensive outfielder with soft hands, fluid footwork, quick and clean exchange, and arm strength with carry on throws that produced a positional velocity of 81 mph.
+ Taylor Young, OF, West Monroe HS(2017)
A 5-foot-9, 160-pound outfielder with a small, athletic frame. Solid defender from both the outfield and infield that showed soft hands, fluid footwork, quick and clean exchange, and accuracy on throws that produced a 75 mph positional velocity. Right-handed hitter that hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load, no stride, explosive lower half, excellent balance, and solid bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 82 mph. Also displayed a compact, short stroke with fluid rhythm and line-drive approach.
