Today, Prep Baseball Report Mississippi takes a look at a few thoughts, observations and quick hits from Monday's event.
East Central recruit, 2018 OF/RHP Will Newell (Florence) has a strong 6-foot, 180-pound lean, athletic frame. Newell started the day off displaying a quality level of athleticism posting 6.98 60-yard dash. Defensively he worked through fluidly with clean exchanges into short, high-3/4 arm stroke recording a positional velocity of 88 mph.
Although the numbers were down from the MS All-State Games, uncommitted 2018 1B/RHP Keonte Carter (Terry) continues to show overall improvements in his game. The right-handed hitter shows developing feel for the barrel with the ability to drive the ball from gap to gap.
A number of unsigned seniors had a solid day as well, including OF Jaydon Cowan (Murrah), who posted a 6.67 60-yard dash and INF Kevin Wright (Ridgeland) displaying fluid actions on the infield with adequate arm strength posting a positional velocity of 80 mph. Cowan has a lean, athletic build at 6-foot-1, 170-pounds. The right-handed hitter hits from a tall setup with simple, developing rhythm in load, and short, top hand dominate swing recording an exit velocity of 85 mph. Wright has a small, athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 145-pounds and as a right-handed hitter showed good rhythm with a relaxed toe tap load and loose hands posting an 82 mph exit velocity.2019 OF Javondus McGruder (Ridgeland) is an athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pounder with a lean frame. The junior had a solid all-around performance. He ran a 7.15 60-yard dash, made accurate throws from the outfield at 80 mph, and posted an exit velocity of 81 mph.
2019 LHP/1B Walker Ladner (Florence) has a husky 5-foot-11, 200-pound frame. The left-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a medium, quick arm stroke. His fastball has natural arm side life, sitting mostly 80-82 mph, dipping only a couple of times to 78-79 mph. Although his off speed stuff is still developing, look for Ladner to continue to make jumps throughout the high school season.
2019 SS/2B Brian Johnson (Murrah) showed nice actions at shortstop, with smooth footwork, mid-line exchange, clean transfers, and accurate throws to first that produced a positional velocity of 83 mph.
2019 C Julian Murphy (Murrah) displayed solid arm strength behind the plate posting a 1.95 pop time, which was the fastest of the day. The right-handed hitter is lean 5-foot-11, 186-pounds with room to continue to fill. In the box, Murphy continued to show improved feel for the barrel with the ability to drive the ball recording an 86 mph exit velocity. He starts from a tall, neutral stance, working with quick hips as he rotates to contact into a high finish.
2019 OF/RHP Brady Windham (Richland) isn't the most imposing physical specimen with his 5-foot-9 150-pound frame, but has proven himself to be a solid player. Defensively, his feet work well in the outfield and he’s able to get solid carry on his throws with a short, clean arm action recording an outfield velocity of 82 mph. Offensively, Windham showed feel for the barrel and bat speed for size posting an 88 mph exit velocity.
Worth noting, 2020 C Joshua Parker (Terry) was able to put up some of the top numbers on the day. Behind the plate the strong, projectable frame at 5-foot-10, 165-pounds showed quality arm strength recording a positional velocity of 74 mph from the crouch and pop times ranging 2.05-2.15. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, relaxed setup, with length in stride, rotational path, natural uphill finish and strength at contact that produced an 88 mph exit velocity.
