Super 60: Mississippi Recap

On Sunday, February 5, Prep Baseball Report hosted the 21st edition of its prestigious, flagship event: the Super 60 Pro Showcase. This invitation-only event featured the top draft prospects in Prep Baseball Report’s expansive coverage area. Over the last 20 years, the Super 60 has become the most heavily scouted preseason event for potential draft picks. The primary purpose of the Super 60 is to give professional area scouts, cross-checkers and scouting directors a head start to the high school season. Mississippi had three representatives that attended the event, including OF/LHP Seth Farni (St. Stanislaus), RHP Patrick Spencer (Washington School) and RHP/3B Hudson Mattox (Kirk Academy), The event was for draft-eligible Class of 2023 prospects.

Farni flashed some serious pop from both sides of the plate, though connected on a couple of pitches from the right side that turned heads. Farni squared up several deep balls including one swing with a 100.3 mph exit velocity and another 397 foot drive (Trackman estimate) that registered 4th best at the event. He now will head back home and get ready to help his teammates, the Saint Stanislaus Rock-a-Chaws, prepare for the 2023 Mississippi high school spring season which starts next week.

Mattox was a dual participant at the Super 60 which is very impressive considering the talent at this event. The right handed hitter found the barrel on many pitches during his batting practice rounds with several line drive’s registering in the mid 90’s. Mattox then stepped on the mound and displayed a fastball with solid arm side run and reaching 91 mph on the day. The RHP from Kirk Academy sets himself apart with spin. Both his slider (up to 83 mph) and curveball, with distinct differences in shape, had spin rates over 2400.

Washington School must be super excited each time they send Spencer to the mound and we got an up close and personal look as to why this past Sunday. The 6-3 RHP showed off some electric stuff including a fastball that rode the top of the zone well (over 2300 spin) and will create a tough situation for hitters this spring. Should they somehow figure out his fastball, they then have to deal with exceptional secondary stuff which includes two breaking balls with sharp bite (up to 2600 spin) and a very polished change up.
