The Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff recently sat down with Florence High School, OF/RHP Will Newell to discuss his recent commitment to East Central Community College. Below is a transcript of our question and answer session:

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?
Newell:
I heard it was one of the most memorable and exciting times of your baseball career.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
Newell:
Distance from home was not a factor, but I knew I wanted to be outside of the central Mississippi area.

PBR: Where did the college you chose first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
Newell:
They came to a few of my high school games, but we did not talk or develop a relationship until after the State Games of Mississippi.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?
Newell:
T-tez Cole or Davis Bradshaw both strong opponents and play the game of baseball well.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were an elite player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
Newell:
The first round of play offs my sophomore season when I hit a three-run homerun against Mississippi State commit Hunter Eldridge.

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Newell:
I was looking for a program where I was just not another player with a number on my back but a player that meant something to the program and school.

PBR: What is your best attribute as a baseball player and how does that transfer onto the field for your team?
Newell: My competitive nature is my best attribute, I want to win no matter if its throwing rocks or back yard football. Every time I step across the white line I come to battle and give 110% the entire game.

PBR: What part of your game needs the biggest improvement, why, and what will you do to improve it?
Newell: Offensively, I won't to be able to handle off speed pitches better and on the mound having the ability to  throw more strikes consistently will definitely help me improve my game.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
Newell:  Go the extra mile and never let anyone tell you that you cannot do something.

PBR: What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?
Newell: My offseason trainging consist of me working out, I love to workout. Also a buddy and me try to keep a steady routine of throwing and hitting in the cages along while practicing with the high school.

PBR: What do you like most about the college you committed to and what were the key factors in making your decision?
Newell:
Warm welcomes every time I was in contact with someone at the school. I felt as if the coaches truly care about the players.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
Newell:
Hinds Community College and Mississippi Delta Community College
