Oxford Open: Quick Hits
June 2, 2023
Oxford, MS - The Oxford Open was held on Wednesday, May 31st at the The Farm (Athletic Performance Center) in Oxford, MS. This event was an open event that consisted of some of the top prospects from the 2024-2028 classes in the northern parts of Mississippi. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman, ran the 60 yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens during the workout and were able to get numbers and metrics. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Wednesday.
Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Wednesday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event along with other pieces of content.

QUICK HITS
+ LHP Gardner Young (Jackson Prep, 2025) has continued to work his way into one of the top left handed pitching prospects in the state of Mississippi and continued to impress on Wednesday at our Oxford Open held at The Farm. The uncommitted rising junior should step into the spotlight as a solid option on the mound for Jackson Prep in 2024 as they look to capture yet another state crown. Young was up to 88 mph with his fastball with added consistency in the strike zone. He also showed advancement with his secondary stuff as well which includes a curveball with tight 11/5 shape and a mimicking change up.
+ INF Caleb Doty (Lausanne Collegiate, 2025) caught everyone’s attention by squaring up multiple pitches during his batting practice round on Wednesday with an event high 98 mph exit velocity. The uncommitted rising junior used a level bath path with occasional loft and intent to punish. Doty also had a very sure handed look on defense with steady hands, good footwork, and strong arm (84 mph). He also turned in one of the better 60 times on the day registering a 6.76.
+ OF James Fenton (Houston, TN, 2024) turned heads right out of the box on Wednesday with a super quick 6.60 60 to start the day. After a time like that you really want to see his skill set and Fenton did not disappoint with a solid performance throughout the day. On defense, the uncommitted rising senior showed off an accurate arm from the outfield with velocities up to 86 mph. At the plate Fenton stayed inside the baseball well and used a line drive approach with plenty of ability to go the other way.
+ SS Christian Doty (Lausanne Collegiate, 2026) is the younger brother of Caleb and it looks like baseball is just what the Doty’s do. Christian was another standout during the event with very fluid and mature movements on defense and a strong arm with an event high 87 mph throw across the diamond. The younger Doty showed off a quick bat and the ability to use the whole field with very advanced pop for a rising sophomore.
+ RHP Josh Scruggs (Oxford, 2026) has a body that attracts the eyes of pitching coaches. The frame has yet to mature, yet the 6-4 loose bodied rising sophomore already reaches 83 mph with his fastball. Scruggs is still developing feel for his secondary offerings though has the shape he’s looking for on both his change up and breaking ball. It will be interesting to see him a year from now!
+ C Quincy Pratt (Magnolia Heights, 2027) bears an uncanny resemblance to another Pratt making waves in Mississippi. Unlike his brother Cooper, Quincy spends most of his time behind the plate on defense and has advanced tools at the position while only a 2027 graduate. Pratt, an Ole Miss commit, had an event high 77 mph arm velocity from behind the dish with very impressive pop times ranging from 1.99 to 2.06. At the plate, he was consistent in finding the barrel with a solid line drive approach and all fields mindset. Special player on the rise!
