Each week during the high school season, we will be announcing the Mizuno Pitcher and Player of the Week for that particular week. Numerous players across the state continue to put up impressive numbers both as position players and pitchers on the mound. This year we will be selecting one Pitcher of the Week and one Player of the Week based on nominations from high school coaches across the state. Thanks to Mizuno for sponsoring both awards this season.

Let's take a look at the Mizuno Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 2 (February 20 - February 25):

 

MIZUNO Player of the week

Walker Van Meter 3B / OF / St. Andrews Episcopal, MS / 2024 Rankings  StateRank: 95 / POS: 9 + 3B Walker Van Meter (St. Andrew's, 2024) had a very solid week picking up 8 hits in 12 at bats, including 3 doubles, a home run, 5 rbi's, and 7 runs scored. The uncommitted junior had a very good showing at our PBR Preseason All State event in January and looks to have carried that into the start of the season. Van Meter is currently hitting at a .533 clip and should be a huge offensive contributor for the Saints as 2023 rolls on.

JD Whitaker RHP / 2B / Hamilton High School, MS / 2026 + RHP JD Whitaker (Hamilton, 2026) was brilliant on Saturday as the freshman threw a no hitter versus Biggersville in 1A action. The right hander pitched 7 innings, walked just 1, with 10 strikeouts and is our PBR Mississippi Mizuno Pitcher of the Week. This comes on the heals of a season debut where Whitaker threw another 5 innings (complete game) allowing only 2 hits, with 5 strikeouts. Very solid start to the season for the 2026!
