Hoover Met Fall Championships: Day 3 Scout Blog
September 23, 2019
It was another great weekend of baseball in Hoover, AL. Below are some of the top performers from Championship Sunday at the Hoover Met Complex.
8:30 Games
Prospex 15U vs. CBA Southeast 16U
-’22 RHP Davis Lomenick (Page, TN HS) entered the game in the bottom of the last inning with CBA Southeast 16U clinging to a 6-4 with 1 out and runners at 2B and 3B. He entered and made quick work of the two hitters he faced, striking out both.
‘22 Davis Lomenick (@DavisLomenick; Page HS) of @615Cba comes in with his team leading 6-4 with 1 out and runners on 2B and 3B to get back to back K’s to preserve the win in their final game of pool play. @PBRTennessee @PBRTournaments #FallChampHM pic.twitter.com/dH7R2yyauL

Vipers Baseball Academy 17U Black vs. Central Alabama Brewers
-After showing impressive stuff on the mound earlier in the tournament, ‘21 RHP/OF Thomas Ballard (Bob Jones HS) looked comfortable in the box as well. Ballard smoked an RBI triple into the LCF gap in his 2nd AB for Vipers Baseball Academy 17U Black. The swing is very simple and creates nice plane. Gap to gap approach for the junior.
Really simple swing from ‘21 RHP/OF Thomas Ballard (@thomasb_4; @BJHSBaseball) on this RBI triple in the 2nd for @VBA16u_Black. Scored on the next pitch via wild pitch. G2G approach. #FallChampHM @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/wDQVQuOIwv

-Hitting in the 2-hole for the Central Alabama Brewers was ‘20 2B/SS Luis Villalba (Vestavia Hills HS). He provided a spark for the Brewers in the 3rd, as he laid off some tough pitches early in the count to get to 3-1 and jumped on a fastball for a single thru the 6-hole. Slightly open stance with a leg kick.
After working the AB into a hitter’s count, ‘20 2B/SS Luis Villalba (@VHBaseballAlums; @CABA_Baseball Brewers) shoots a single into LF. Solid defender up the middle. #FallChampHM @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/QlKSLQK9ym

-After 2 OF assists in gameplay yesterday, ‘22 OF Landon Baeder (Hazel Green HS) impressed at the dish today for the Vipers. Baeder worked the count 3-2 with the bases loaded and proceeded to pull a fastball over the 3rd baseman's head for a 3 RBI double. Shows some quick twitch actions and is a solid runner. Interesting prospect for the ‘22 class.
Love what we have been seeing from ‘22 OF Landon Baeder (@BaederLandon; @HGHS_Baseball) this weekend. Smokes a 3 RBI double down the LF line for @VBA16u_Black to blow it open. Strong arm from the OF and tracks well. #FallChampHM @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/9fFX3AvKG7

-'22 JW Hopkins (Bob Jones HS) had a big day with the bat on Sunday. The physical 1B had a no doubt 2 RBI bomb in the game. Hopkins would later collect two more hits in the Vipers second game of the day, including a 2B and 2 RBI's.
Grind Rangers 2022 vs. Central Alabama Brewers
-’22 Caden Petrey (Whitley County, KY HS) had a very successful weekend at the Hoover Met Fall Championships. The 6’0 175 lb. sophomore collected multiple hits each day of the tourney, including a 2 RBI double to stake the Grind Rangers 2022 to an early lead.

-’22 Lathan Vickers (Benjamin Russell HS) showed plus bat speed during the event and took some very nice swings on the weekend. The Benjamin Russell product pitches as well but the swing impressed this weekend, including a standup triple in this game. The swing is very short and compact with some juice off the barrel.

TPL 18U vs. Dinger Nation Gold
-’20 3B/RHP Colten Keith (Biloxi HS; MS) was a man among boys this weekend in Hoover. After he was clocked up to 93 mph yesterday, Keith put his offensive prowess on display today. Hitting from the left side, the Arizona State commit jumped all over a hanging breaker in his 1st AB for an RBI ground rule double to put TPL 18U ahead. In the 2nd AB, Keith worked the count to 2 strikes and sat back on an offspeed pitch and deposited it into the LCF gap for a 2 RBI triple. There is so much to like about the senior. A legit 2-way talent. #32 Overall in the ‘20 National Player Rankings.
After throwing ? on the mound yesterday for @TheProspectLab 18U, 3B/RHP Colten Keith (@coltkeith3; Biloxi HS) jumps all over a hanging breaking ball for an RBI ground rule double. Legit 2-way talent. #32 Overall in the @PrepBaseball ‘20 Class. #FallChampHM @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/c3IbPPL0yE

Here's the triple in the 2nd AB...
Here’s another look at Keith (@coltkeith3) in his 2nd AB. Does a nice job of adjusting to an off speed pitch and shoots it to the LCF gap for a 2 RBI triple. @ASU_Baseball recruit. #FallChampHM@PBRTournaments @ShooterHunt @prepbaseball pic.twitter.com/h39UBa7Ydi

-’20 RHP/IF Will Smith (Prattville HS) was brilliant on the mound for TPL 18U. Working from a sidearm slot, the arm has some “whippiness” and he shows solid feel for multiple pitches on the bump. Nothing he throws stays straight and he does a nice job of keeping hitters off balance and missing barrels. The FB was 81-83 with big time ASR to go along with a slider at 71-72 that is a definite late breaking pitch. He also showed a CB with depth at 65-66 and his best pitch may be his CH at 70-71 that really showed tumble into RH hitters. Really attacks the lower half of the zone. Also had a hit and an RBI.
‘20 Will Smith (@PrattvilleBB) has an easy, athletic delivery from a low arm slot for @TheProspectLab Nothing he throws stays straight. Showing FB 81-83, SL 71-72, CB 65-66, CH 70-71. @PBRTournaments #FallChampHM pic.twitter.com/2rr83ZYluO

TPL 17U vs. CBA Southeast 17U
-After an inside the park HR yesterday, ‘21 C Hunter Lopacki (Bessemer Academy) put his defense on display today. The uncommitted junior was easily one of the best defensive C’s in Hoover. Very quiet receiver and shuts down opposing running games. Loose in the hips and is very athletic behind the plate. Threw out a runner from his knees at 2nd today in gameplay.
Really impressed with the defensive tools from ‘21 C Hunter Lopacki (@HunterLopacki; @BessemerAcademy) of @TheProspectLab 17U. Shuts down opposing running games and receives well. #FallChampHM @PBRTournaments pic.twitter.com/YYQxNgfvoI
