High School Crosscheck: Week 14
May 21, 2018
The draft is two weeks away and state tournaments are happening across the country. In a single-elimination game last week, RHP Braxton Ashcraft (Robinson HS, TX) took the mound and helped his team advance to the region semifinals with a shutout, nine strikeouts and four hits and three walks allowed. The 6-foot-6, 190-pound Baylor recruit has long limbs and an athletic, lean and projectable frame. He works from a high-3/4 slot with a long, loose arm swing and relative ease down the mound with an athletic delivery. His fastball sat mostly 91-92 mph in the first, hitting 93-95 once apiece. He also flashed sinking action at the bottom of the zone. Ashcraft throws two different breaking balls—an 11/5 curveball at 76-79 and an 80-84 slider with 10/4 shape.
He made several defensive plays coming off the mound, including one in the seventh on a comebacker in which he turned and threw a strike to get the lead runner at third base. His velocity held up throughout the game, as he sat 90-92 the entire night and was still able to hit 93 several times late in the game.
Here are some notes on other high school draft prospects across the country…
