Gulf Coast Open + Rising Stars ID: Quick Hits
July 12, 2023
PERKINSTON, MS - The Gulf Coast Open & Rising Stars ID was held on Tuesday, July 11th at the Mississippi Gulf Coast CC in Perkinston, MS. This event was an open event that consisted of some of the top prospects from the 2024-2028 classes across all parts of Mississippi. These players went through extended pro-style workout that included batting practice using Trackman, ran the 60 yard dash using Swift Performance, and much more. Pitchers were able to throw in simulated bullpens during the workout and were able to get numbers and metrics. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Tuesday.
Kicking off our post-event coverage for this event, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from Tuesday. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release different statistical leaderboards for the event along with other pieces of content.

Gulf coast open: quick hits
+ INF/RHP Ryan Nelson (Warren Central, 2024) also showed some next level potential as a two way player. Nelson used good range and a smooth glove on the infield and looks to be able to handle both middle infield positions if needed. He stepped on the mound and couldn't throw his fastball straight if he tried. The righty worked up to 85 mph with plus arm side action and tight sweeping action to his breaking ball.
+ INF/RHP Ty Lamartina (Acadiana, LA., 2026) was yet another dual prospect at the event and only a rising sophomore, though had a mature presence about him on the field with a polished look in most skill sets. At the plate, Lamartina worked the middle of the field consistently with developing pop and a fairly level bat path. On the mound, the rising sophomore is up to 83 mph already with developing secondary stuff.
+ OF Truman Moyer (Hahnville, LA., 2024) first caught our attention as he fired consecutive 90 mph (T91) bullets to home from right field. Later Moyer stepped in the box and sent several line drives into right field showing off his opposite field approach and present pop which included multiple 90 plus exit velocities.
+ C Wyatt Buratt (Ascension Christian, LA., 2025) was a surprise behind the plate with an event high 79 mph throw to second which resulted in a 1.94 pop time which also led all catchers on the day. At the plate, Buratt used a middle to pull side approach and found a few barrels with upper 80’s exit velocities.
+ RHP TJ Davis (Lamar Christian, 2025) doesn't wow anyone yet with his velocity, though we feel more is coming. The rising junior showed feel for his fastball which topped out around 80 mph though the arm action says there’s definitely more in the tank. Davis was all over the plate with 3 solid pitches and and a pretty good developing change up that came in a little high in velocity though had a soft contact producing look to it.
+ RHP Austin Rylee (Brookhaven, 2024) showed a polished look on the mound while working his fastball up to 87 mph multiple times on Tuesday. The uncommitted rising senior used good sweeping spin off the plate to righties and killed the spring with his change up which mimicked his fastball arm action well.
Rising Stars id: Quick Hits
+ OF Landon Swinney (Tupelo, 2027) showed advancing tools in several areas at our Gulf Coast event. The rising freshman turned in solid numbers at the plate during his batting practice using a line drive approach with a level bat path and worked the middle of the field consistently with upper 80 exit velocities. Swinney looks polished in the outfield as well with decent speed, a developing arm strength with accuracy on throws to the plate.
+ INF/RHP Ardan Calegan (Mandeville, LA., 2028) is a player moving in a good direction as a dual prospect. The switch hitting infielder has a maturing frame though movement patterns suggest he will be able to provide future coaches with two way help. On the mound, the rising 8th grader still has development in front him but already shows feel for three solid pitches.
