Sumrall - On Monday, the Prep Baseball Report staff was on hand to catch the season opener between Sumrall and Hattiesburg. Below are notes on select players from Monday's action.

Hunter Barrett, RHP, Sumrall, 2019
Barrett was solid in his outing, throwing four innings and only giving up a run, while also driving in three of the four Bobcat runs. On the mound the right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a quick arm stroke, athletic delivery with regular effort. Fastball sat in the 82-85 range, topping out at 87 mph in his first inning of work, pitching mostly at 80-82 mph for the rest of his outing. Challenged the hitters with fastballs down in the zone also flashing a breaking ball that showed 10/5 shape and occasional tight spin at 68-72 mph that kept hitters off balance. Barrett also displayed a balanced, middle of the field approach as a right-handed hitter splitting the left-center field gap on an 88 mph fastball.

Graham Crawford, C, Sumrall, 2018       
Uncommitted. Medium 6-foot, 205-pound frame. Crawford has an athletic setup with soft hands behind the plate receiving. Short arm stroke on throw downs in-between innings recorded a pop time ranging 2.12-2.2. The switch-hitter hit from the left side all night and recorded a single to center field.

Garrett Robins, SS/RHP Sumrall, 2018
Pearl River CC commit. The right-hander came in and closed it out for the home team after starting the game playing shortstop. Working from a high-¾ slot with a medium arm stroke pitching mostly at 84-86 mph but touched 87 mph and 88 mph with his fastball. Pounded the strike zone with mostly fastballs locating to both sides of the plate strike out one while walking one.

Billy Garrity, 3B, Sumrall, 2019
Uncommitted. Athletic player that stands 6-foot-0, 195-pounds with a lean muscular frame. The left-handed hitter has a balanced setup at the plate with quick hands through the zone, scorched an opposite field home run.

Caleb Tart, SS, Hattiesburg, 2020
Uncommitted. Wiry, athletic, 5-foot-11, 158-pound still developing frame. Tart may be young, but he gained varsity experience as a freshman and it showed in his presence and actions. Hitting out of the leadoff spot the sophomore, right-handed hitter took good swings all night on mid 80’s fastballs while only recording one hit. Tart displayed fluid actions at the plate and at SS and should be an intriguing player to follow as he continues to physically mature.

Dexter Jordan, 3B/RHP, Hattiesburg, 2018
Louisiana-Lafayette commit. At 6-foot, 193-pounds, Jordan has a strong, muscular frame. The right-handed hitter has raw bat speed with a flat path that stays in the zone a long time. Recording two hits on the night, Jordan displays an all field approach with strength at contact and was able to come through big for his team in the fifth driving a ball off the center field wall. A two-way player, the right-handed pitcher worked from high-¾ slot with an up tempo delivery, quick arm stroke and short stride down the mound. His fastball sat 82-85 mph for one inning of work. Threw only a couple off speed pitches, flashing a breaking ball at 67 mph and a changeup at 64 mph.

AJ Stinson, RHP/2B, Hattiesburg, 2018
Alabama State commit. At 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, Stinson has a durable frame with room for projection. The right-hander works from a high-3/4 slot with quick hand speed out front, and a longer arm stroke in the back. His fastball appears to ride through the zone with cutting action, receiving several swing and misses on the night. Touched 88-91 mph several times in his outing, but pitched mostly 84-87 and was effective up in the zone. Stinson showed feel for his breaking ball commanding it for a strike. Breaking ball displayed occasional depth at 75-77 mph.
