East Coast Sox Scout Day: Session 1 Notes

This Thursday, June 4th, we traveled over to Meridian, MS to check out some of the top players in the East Coast Sox, one of the top travel baseball organizations in the country. In 3 sessions, there were a combined total of 192 players at the event. Mother Nature was perfect with not a single drop of rain and sunshine the whole day. It was a great event at Q.V. Sykes Park.

Over the next few days, we will be rolling out some post-event content and coverage on our social media and website, so be sure to keep an eye out. There were tons of other talented players at this event. Today, we will take a look at some of the top performers from Session 1 of the East Coast Sox Scout Day.

 

Pitchers

 

’22 RHP/3B Chase Cornelius, Guntersville

6-foot 220 pound arm that was impressive on the mound during Session 1. Fastball was a sneaky 82-84 mph with occasional run into RHH’s. Breaking ball was 71-73 mph with 11/5 break and downer action to it. Changeup was a solid offering at 77-78 mph. A ‘22 arm to keep an eye on as he continues to fill out and add more strength to his already physical frame. 

‘22 RHP/3B Brice Deaton, Pontotoc (MS)

6-foot-4 205 pound arm that stood out on the mound. One of the top arms in the ‘22 MS class and he showed why on the mound. Fastball was primarily 84-85 mph while bumping 86 mph a couple times. Sink into RHH’s. Breaking ball was sharp at 70-71 mph. Changeup was a solid offering and thrown for strikes at 71-73 mph. Also featured a screwball at 83-84 mph that acted like a 2-seam fastball. Swung it well during BP from the left side with an exit velo of 91 mph.

‘22 RHP Camden Diamond, Mobile Christian

6-foot 163 pounder that pitches bigger than his frame shows. Fastball was 80-82 mph while touching 84 mph. Pitch showed some arm side run into a RHH. Really commanded the pitch and located it to all quadrants. Breaking ball was 62-63 mph with potential. Changeup offering mimicked the fastball in terms of action at 75-76 mph. Really like the upside for this arm as he continues to grow and add strength to his frame.

‘23 RHP/OF Corbin Gillentine, Amory (MS)

5-foot-10 177 pounder that looked locked in during his bullpen. Fastball played 84-86 mph consistently with arm side run. Showed the ability to mix in & out. Breaking ball was 69-71 mph with 11/5 action. Changeup showed fade at 74-75 mph. Over the top arm slot.

 

 

Hitters

 

’22 SS/RHP Ayden Amis, Andalusia

5-foot-9 170 pounder that had a very impressive round of BP. Heard a lot about him prior to the event and he showed out with the bat. Upright stance with natural lift in swing. Pull side pop with some thump in the bat. Creates an uphill plane on his swing path and stays connected throughout. One to watch this summer.

‘23 C/RHP Cameran Christ, Sam Houston (LA)

6-foot 180 pound frame that does everything at a high level for his age. At the plate, Christ showed a repeatable swing from the left side with the ability to lift the gaps. Constant line drives with the potential for more power. A premium defender behind the plate with 2.05-2.08 pop times and a strong arm. Soft hands receiving and blocks well. Handled upperclassmen arms very well during bullpens. Mississippi State recruit.

‘22 3B/SS Charlie Keller, Mobile Christian

6-foot-3 175 pounder that has added significant strength to his frame. Looks the part. Left handed bat that uses his strong lower half to drive balls all over the field consistently during BP. Looked smooth defensively during the infield portion of the workout. Mississippi State recruit.

‘22 OF/RHP Alex Wade, Madison Academy

6-foot-3 170 pounder that just shows up and continues to mash balls during BP. Athletic setup with a rhythmic load and a leg kick. Some lift in his swing. Posted one of the top exit velo at 93 mph. Moves well in the outfield. Auburn recruit.

‘22 1B/3B Brodie Morrow, Hartselle

6-foot 235 pounder that has definite pull side pop. Utilizes his strong lower half in his controlled aggressive swing. Slight uphill bat path that allows him to hit for power. Posted the second best exit velo of Session 1 at 96 mph. Also a quality arm on the mound that was up to 82 mph with feel for spin. 

‘22 OF Dylan Bowen, TNXL Academy (FL)

6-foot-1 170 pounder that posted the best exit velo of Session 1 at 98 mph. Hits for more power than his frame would suggest. Sprayed balls all over the field during his round of BP. Good defender in the OF that posted an OF velo to the plate of 85 mph.
