Class 2019 Rankings: A Look Inside

Last week, Prep Baseball Report Mississippi released its first edition of the Class of 2020 Rankings, after our scouting staff tracked down the top emerging talent at high school games, tournaments and showcases during the spring and summer months.

The update of the 2019 class will begin the process of dusting off and updating the Mississippi class rankings, so be sure to check-in regularly in the weeks to come, as there will plenty of updates and content to keep you busy.
Today we take a look at four 2019 prospects that were risers in our recent updated list.

Caleb Sterling C / RHP / Warren Central, MS / 2019Rankings StateRank: 28 / POS: 5
Lean 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame with athletic. Left-handed hitter starts from a neutral stance before he loads back. Short lift of his front leg, into a short stride forward as he creates some separation of hands. Balanced swing, loose hands, barrel is uphill through the zone with good extension through contact. Line-drive contact that produced an exit velocity of 82 mph. Ran a 7.37 60-yard dash. Behind the plate displayed good lower half mobility with soft hands and easy, directional footwork. Soft hands receiving quick clean exchange with quality arm strength that produced pop times ranging 1.81-1.92 and a velocity from the crouch of 77 mph. Right-hand pitcher works from a high-¾ slot with a medium, loose arm stroke. Tilts his shoulder at the top of his leg lift, leaning back before working down the mound with a drop and drive delivery and an athletic finish. Arm works well from back to front and there is still room for his velocity to jump. Fastball was scattered around the zone at 83-86 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape at 69-70 mph and changeup showed slight fading action to the arm side at 70-71 mph. |

John Mitchell OF / RHP / South Jones, MS / 2019Rankings StateRank: 30 / POS: 7
Lean 6-foot-4, 190-pound with athletic build. Displayed solid athleticism posting a 6.81 60-yard dash. Right-handed hitter that starts from a tall stacked setup with loose rhythm. Works into load with controlled leg kick, as hands separate back and down, landing balanced. Short, rotational path creating line-drive/ground ball contact with bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 93 mph. Outfielder that plays through the ball with smooth footwork, athletic strides, clean exchange, and throws from a high-¾ slot with accuracy posting a positional velocity of 85 mph. |

Leo Harris SS / RHP / St. Martin, MS / 2019Rankings StateRank: 32 / POS: 6
Athletic 6-foot-3, 165-pound frame, with quick-twitch throughout build. Displayed high level of athleticism posting a 6.72 60-yard dash. Right-handed hitter with open, wide, balanced setup. Working closed with short stride and subtle rhythm in hands. Line-drive type approach with quick hands, direct path and solid lower half use posted an 89 mph exit velocity. Solid defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, slow, clean exchange into 3/4 release with accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 81 mph. |

Shelby Terrell RHP / West Marion , MS / 2019Rankings StateRank: 33 / POS: 9
Wiry 6-foot-2. 160-pound frame with long limbs and room to add strength. Medium, clean arm stroke into high-3/4 release with quick arm speed and normal effort. Upbeat tempo to the delivery with fluid rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction, lands square and finishes athletic. Repeats delivery well commanding fastball at 83-86 mph showing downward angle with occasional sinking action. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape, flashing occasional tight spin with depth at 72-76 mph. |
