Alabama Daily Roundup: April 1
April 2, 2021
MOBILE, AL - The Satsuma Gators and UMS Wright Bulldogs opened up area play for 5A Area 2 on a beautiful, yet very windy, afternoon on the campus of UMS Wright. The Bulldogs began area play 1-0 as they came from behind to defeat the Gators by a 6-2 margin. As is typical, senior LHP Maddux Bruns (2021, Mississippi State) took the mound in front of a bevy of MLB scouts in attendance and was his usual dominant self. Bruns worked 5 innings on the night and gave up a bunt single to lead off the game but did not allow another hit the rest of the way. He struck out 12 and walked 4 hitters, while collecting the win. The Gators were able to push across 2 runs (1 ER) in that first inning but that would be all of their offense for the night. Satsuma sent RHP Brett Nix (2023) to the mound and he did a solid job keeping the Bulldog hitters off balance during his 3 1/3 inning stint on the mound. The sophomore scattered 3 hits and struck out 3 hitters and only issued 1 walk. Nix was credited with giving up 2 runs but neither were earned. He did not factor in the decision.
The scoring started in the top half of the 1st inning as the Gators played small ball from the start while also capitalizing on a couple of walks and wild pitches. Collin Pierce (2021) started the game off by getting on via drag bunt and later stole second base. Conner Thames (2021) walked and then both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Jansen Banashak (2024) scored Pierce on a sacrifice fly to right field and Thames would score soon after on a passed ball, staking the Gators to a 2-0 lead. This would be all of the offense for Satsuma on the night. UMS Wright countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st as Cole Blaylock (2023) left off the inning with a HBP and later scored on a single by Trey Singleton (2021). That score (2-1 Satsuma) held until the home half of the 4th when UMS Wright pushed across a run to knot things up at 2-2. Jackson Bassett (2021) walked to lead off the inning and with 2 outs he scored on a bases loaded walk to tie things up. UMS Wright eventually took the lead and provided the final runs of the night by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Seth Farni (2023, Ole Miss) singled with 1 out and Bruns and Bassett followed with a walk and Trey Weaver (2021) followed with an RBI single, scoring Farni. Will Jordan (2022) , who pinch ran, eventually scored on a bases loaded walk and the final two runs would score on RBI singles from Pearson Ikner (2021) and Cameron Snypes (2021). The last two runs gave us the final 6-2 final score. Joseph Rice (2023) relieved Bruns and tossed two shutout innings to preserve the win.
