2024 Future Games: Team Mississippi, Quick Hits
July 30, 2024
From Wednesday, July 24, through Sunday, July 28, Prep Baseball is hosting the next edition of its prestigious Future Games at LakePoint Sports Complex in Emerson, Ga., featuring the country's best uncommitted talent. And, for the first time ever, the Future Games is hosting not just its typical set of incoming juniors and freshmen, but also a 17U division of uncommitted Class of 2025 players who will participate in the inaugural Senior Future Games.
On the first day of the 2024 Future Games, all players representing grad classes 2025, 2026, and 2028 will be participating in a pro-style workout in front of a fleet of Division I coaches alongside fellow prospects representing nearly every state in the nation, followed by game play the next three days at LakePoint Sports.
Inside this piece, we'll be highlighting some of the standouts from Team Mississippi from the 2024 Prep Baseball Future Games.

TEAM MISSISSIPPI: QUICK HITS
Eric EJ Booth Jr. OF / 1B / Oak Grove, MS / 2026Continues to make his case for the top spot in the 2026 class. The solid 6-0, 200 pound center fielder from Oak Grove ran an event best 6.37 60 on Day 1 and then sparkled in game play the rest of the week. Booth’s combination of speed and power (98 EV), along with the ability to drive the baseball to all fields, will make him a very hot ticket come Thursday. While very consistent at finding the most of the barrel, his legs make even the most routine ground-balls interesting.

Henry Abt OF / RHP / Hartfield Academy , MS / 2026Rankings StateRank: 27 / POS: 10
Had a very good day at the Jackson ID earlier this summer and earned an invite to this years Future Games. The 5-10, 185 pound rising junior from Hartfield Academy definitely made the most of his time in Atlanta. In Game 1, Abt picked up a couple of hits including a big rbi single to the left field showing off his ability to use the entire field. Later in the event he added a stand up double to left using his 100 mph exit velocity. As one of several solid dual threats on the roster, Abt also toed the rubber in Game 3 using a fastball up 86 mph and showing solid tumbling action to his 12/6 breaker.

Tyner Flynt / LHP / Presbyterian Christian School, MS / 2026Has one of the sweetest swings you will see and has progressively gotten more dangerous at the plate every year since we first saw him at a Rising Stars event in 2020. During the Future Games workout on Wednesday, Flynt recorded exit velocities up to 99 mph while spraying the baseball around the field. The 6-0, 180 pounder found a pitch on the inner half in Game 2 and delivered a ground rule double over the right fielder. Flynt’s delivery on the mound is pretty solid as well and on Friday night he jumped on the mound and threw up a zero using a running fastball up to 88 mph with one of the better change ups we witnessed during the event.

Nelson Barthel C / OF / Northwest Rankin, MS / 2026Rankings StateRank: 15 / POS: 1
There’s something special about watching catchers work for their pitchers. A few years ago we saw a workhorse in Duncan Matthews (now at South Alabama) and this year Nelson Barthel fits that mold. He still has work ahead of him, which all young players do, but its evident he understands his role. On Wednesday, the Northwest Rankin product put up some solid numbers which included a 1.94 pop time and 79 mph catcher velocity. At the plate the 5-9, 200 pound Barthel is advanced as well with a gap to gap, line drive approach with middle of the order run producing ability. He may need his phone charger on Thursday!

Taylor Latham RHP / OF / Hartfield Academy, MS / 2026Rankings StateRank: 6 / POS: 1
Made the most of his outing on Friday as he got the starting nod versus Team Louisiana. The sturdy 6-0, 185 pounder from Hartfield Academy opened some eyes dotting his fastball to all quadrants in the strike zone and sitting in the 88-90 range while touching 91 a few times. The righty was in command and went right after hitters using his fastball and a breaking ball with sharp action and up to 2600 spin. He’s part of a dynamic core that should give Hartfield a solid chance at ending Jackson Preps 7 year run in MAIS 6A.

Jackson Meehan SS / RHP / Northwest Rankin, MS / 2026Rankings StateRank: 21 / POS: 2
Had a dominant outing versus Arkansas on Saturday night as the 6-2, 180 pound right hander from Northwest Rankin got the start on the mound. Meehan, who we had seen at previous Mississippi events came with a little extra to Atlanta as his fastball sat 87-90 mph throughout his 3 innings of work. He worked both sides of the plate well while mixing in a swing and miss slider and some fiery competitiveness! With his lean and lanky frame, the next calendar year could add even more velocity to his arsenal.

Justin Word RHP / SS / MS, Jackson Academy, MS / 2026Rankings StateRank: 8 / POS: 2
Led things off in Game 1 and went to work quick with a lead off double down the right field line for his first of two hits. We have liked the 5-10,165 pounder since we first saw him in 2021 at a scout day and he has continued to grow his game which is very exciting to watch. Word, who recently transferred to Jackson Academy, runs well (6.80 60) and drives the baseball to all fields using quick hands, a level bat path, and aggression into contact. He’s a guy you want on your team!

Justin San Miguel SS / 2B / OCEAN SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL, MS / 2026Yet another dynamic middle infielder on Team Mississippi’s roster, Justin San Miguel came on strong with his bat this spring and earned a spot on this years roster. We knew he had a smooth glove and strong arm and it was just a matter of time for his bat. Well his bat is here now too as the 5-10, 170 pounder hit 11 home runs this past spring. San Miguel has high upside and will continue to get stronger which is scary to think about. Big week ahead for the rising junior.
