2018 TOS: Wednesday Notebook
June 21, 2018
The 2018 Tournament of Stars takes place in Cary, NC, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex from June 19-23. Here are highlights from Wednesday, the second day of games…
BRAVE 4, UNITED 3
The first game on Wednesday saw a spike in overall play from Tuesday’s action, which is to say more strikes were thrown and the defense played spotless baseball. Brave mounted a 4-0 lead after five innings and held on for the victory.
Ultimately, the decisive blow was delivered by 2020 SS/RHP Masyn Winn (Kingwood HS, TX), who turned on a fastball up in the zone for a run-scoring triple to left-center field. Winn, a 5-foot-9, 163-pound Stanford recruit, has showed off his legitimate two-way prowess so far. On Tuesday, he closed out the Brave’s victory by striking out two in the final frame, pitching off his 91-93 mph fastball and mid-70s slider.
Here are some more notes from the rest of Brave vs. United…
+ Left-handed hitting 2019 C Matt McCormick (St. Laurence HS, IL) is a no-frills prospect. No batting gloves, no accessories, no flash. Just get in the box and wait for whatever the pitcher decides he wants to do. McCormick, who recently earned the Prep Baseball Report Illinois Player of the Year, is mechanically simple with strong hands and an opposite-field approach. For a middle-of-the-lineup bat, the 5-foot-10, 207-pound West Virginia recruit rarely strikes out and is extremely patient with a disciplined eye. His first at-bat illustrated his offensive polish. He fell quickly behind 0-2, but then proceeded to foul off several good pitches, lay off a few others and work the count even before he lined a 91 mph fastball for a single to left field. McCormick also added another single through the left side, walked and finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. During the spring he batted .510 with 17 doubles, nine homers, six triples, 48 RBI, walked 26 times and struck out only twice while competing in the toughest league in Illinois.
