As the fall comes to a close, the PBR Missouri staff is set to update all of our class rankings for one final time in 2023. This fall was as in-depth as ever for our crew, as we saw more players than we’d seen before through events and PBR Tournaments. 

Missouri's junior class looks extremely special, with high level talent on a national scale at the top, as well as a multitude of impact-type depth pieces scattered throughout. Several of the top prospects in the state will find themselves within the top-200 on our national rankings.

Below you will learn more about this class as a whole, including the fresh faces that debut in these rankings for the first time.

The top-10 of our rankings remain unchanged with the same names staying in the same order from our post summer update. Nine players from that bunch are committed to Power Five schools with the lone uncommitted name being RHP JD Dohrmann (Vianney), who starred for Team Missouri at the Future Games and has a plethora of high level schools to pick from. OF Leo Humbert (Francis Howell; Mizzou), INF Caeden Cloud (Nixa; Kentucky), and RHP Richie Swain (Timberland; Mississippi State) have all committed since our last rankings update. 

JD Dohrmann

One name worth highlighting that climbed more than 10 spots up our board after an impressive look this fall is RHP Ashton Nance (Blue Springs South; Kansas commit). Nance has no shortage of size or strength within his 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame, and he’s a name that’s trended up quite a bit over the last calendar year. He showed well to our staff at Creekside this summer, though provided his loudest and most polished look to date at the Mac N Seitz Scout Day this fall. There, Nance bumped his fastball up to 90.1 mph, pitching at 86-89 mph, with true arm-side action and late run. Nance landed a 74-75 mph slider for strikes consistently and he also showed feel for an upper-70s changeup that played off his fastball’s plane. Set to be a key piece for the Jaguars’ pitching staff this upcoming spring, Nance could continue to climb up this list as his high school career progresses.

FALL NEWCOMERS 

We welcomed a multitude of names to these rankings as a result of a productive fall, expanding this 2025 board to 250 names. Below are a handful of prospects worth a mention that make their debuts for the first time this update. 

Cooper Pumphrey RHP / Ozark, MO / 2025 From 9/26/23: "...couldn’t have left a more positive impression on our staff as a result. Pumphrey has professional size, boasting a 6-foot-6, 200-pound frame with present strength and room for more. Still learning how to get down the mound in rhythm, Pumphrey’s raw arm strength showed almost immediately, as he touched 90.4 mph with his heater, pitching in the upper-80s throughout. He showed some feel for a bendy, high-arching low-70s breaking ball that averaged 2430 RPM, reaching as high as 2529 RPM, per TrackMan. Pumphrey’s current ability, synced up with his future talents and sheer size, are certainly intriguing, and he’s definitely a high follow name in the state’s junior class."

Drake Gawer RHP / Sullivan, MO / 2025 From 9/18/23: "...easily one of the day’s biggest winners...came away from Atkins Field on Sunday afternoon as a high follow prospect in the state’s current junior class. Standing at long, lanky, and lean-limbed 6-foot-6, 181-pounds, Gawer’s a controlled mover downhill at his size with a loose, fast arm to pair. His fastball played at 86-88 mph with carry at times, averaging 17 inches of vertical break, reaching 20.4 inches at peak. Gawer turned to a tight, bullet-like slider at 76-78 mph often, spotting it around the zone with confidence and pairing it nicely with his fastball. He also showed a 70-72 mph curveball and flashed fade on a 79-80 mph changeup, too."

Calen Jones 1B / Helias Catholic, MO / 2025 From 9/18/23: "...popped to our staff at the Top Prospect Games this summer after a noteworthy showing on the mound, and the 6-foot, 175-pound junior has only ticked up since that look in June. Jones pumped the firmest fastball of the entire event, touching 87.8 mph on his firmest bullet, while sitting at 85-87 mph during his lone inning of work. His arm works fast and easy with arm speed out front, and he creates natural carry up in the zone on true four-seam fastball that averaged 18.2 inches of vertical carry. Though he’s still developing full feel for his breaking ball, he did flash late lateral break on it at times at 71-74 mph. Jones enters the fall and winter seasons with an arrow-up next to his name and is definitely one to follow as his junior year continues."

Owen Nesslage LHP / Kirkwood, MO / 2025 From 9/18/23: "...has a considerable ceiling on the bump and is starting to gain more comfort with himself downhill. Nesslage works with some deception, stacking his arm behind his back hip, pitching at 78-81 mph with his fastball. His bread-and-butter pitch appeared to be his breaking ball, which showed downer spin and some sweep in the mid-60s, averaging 2600+ RPM."

Jake Riggin LHP / Lee Summit West, MO / 2025 From 10/29/23: "...6-foot, 175-pounds athletic southpaw that impressed at the Mac N Seitz Scout Day in late October. Fastball played at 83-85 mph with carry up in the zone at times. Flashed feel to land a breaking ball with depth for strikes, 69-70 mph, averaged 2500+ RPM. Killed spin and lift on a changeup at 76-78 mph with above-average horizontal movement (17+ inches on average).

Garrett Roper LHP / Blue Springs South, MO / 2025 From 10/29/23: "...was another left-handed arm that showed well at the Mac N Seitz Scout Day. 5-foot-11, 160-pounds with a loose quick arm and simple athletic delivery. Fastball played at 83-85 mph with natural run from a 3/4 slot. Tight spin on a firm slider at 77-79 mph that he spotted for strikes, and he also showed a changeup at 76-78 mph."

Brady Vessells C / Seckman , MO / 2025 From 9/18/23: "...another name that looked the part in his first event...built at a strong, compact 5-foot-10, 175-pounds, Vessels showed one of the day’s stronger right-handed swings. He worked mostly to the pull-side throughout his round, staying level through the zone with noticeable hand speed (25.4 mph) and bat speed (75.3 mph). Both his average (87 mph) and max (97 mph) exit velocity marks were towards the top of our batted ball leaderboards from this event."

Braden Ray LHP / Francis Howell, MO / 2025 From 9/18/23: "...was another arm that impressed in our trip to Columbia on Sunday. The sophomore southpaw filled up the zone with his fastball, challenging hitters often at 82-84 mph, while peaking at 86 mph on his firmest bullet, averaging 17 inches of vertical break. Ray spun a short wrinkle slider at times in this look in the low-to-mid-70s, too."
