Prep Baseball Report-Kansas held the Underclass Prospect Games on May 31 at Kansas State University.  Nearly 100 players participated in the 2018 and 2019 class. 

Player profiles have been updated with video, times, velos and profile pictures.  Today we will take a look at the catchers performances from the event.  Although some catchers may have played other positions, this is just a break down of the catching performances from the day.  In the days to come we will break down outfielders, infielders and pitchers.

Top Catcher Prospect

Cameron Chick, Hickman (MO), 2018
Chick is a 5-foot-9 165-pound switch hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran a 6.72 60, one of the fastest 60 times of the day, and got down the line in 4.64-seconds.  He has an 87 mph exit velo from the left side and a 91 mph exit velo from the right side, both among the event’s best. At the plate, attacks ball with aggressive sing from both sides, solid consistent contact, strong hands with with gap to gap power from both sides, repeats swing. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.06 and 2.14, fluid and clean exchange with high-three quarters release, loose arm action, momentum through the catch, mostly accurate throw, athletic actions with fluid footwork, 78 mph positional velo, one of the top velos for the event.  Singled and doubled in game action.

Toby Becker, Rock Creek, 2019
Becker is a 6-foot-2 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2019 class.  He ran a 7.51 60 and got down the line in 4.77-seconds.  He posted a 78 mph exit velo. At the plate, swing produced middle to pull side line drives, starts with an open stance, fluid rhythm and loose hands.  Behind the plate, had pop times of 2.27 to 2.35, high three-quarters arm slot, fluid footwork with clean exchange, 66 mph positional velo,

Ben Buchinger, Liberty (MO), 2018
Buchinger is a 6-foot 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 8.39 60 and a 4.71 home-to-first.  He has a 78 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts with an open stance, middle to pull line drives with high finish, body stays under control during swing, Behind the plate, pop times between 2.04 and 2.12, quick transfer and throw, high three quarters release, mostly accurate throws at 71 mph.

Reese Carmona, Lawrence, 2018
Carmona is a 5-foot-6 140-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.03 60 and a 4.21 home-to-first, one of the top for the day.  He has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, smooth load to back side, hands work to inside of baseball, opposite field line drives, level path to extension, loose whip in bath path.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.24 and 2.25, over the top arm slot, clean exchange, quick release, accurate throws to the bag, 71 mph positional velo.

Dawson Erholtz, Lee’s Summit West (MO), 2019
Erholtz is a 5-foot-11 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.33 60 and has a home-to-first time of 4.77.  He has a 73 mph exit velo. At the plate, uses the whole field, athletic stance in set up, smooth rhythm and timing, good feel for the barrel, doubled down right field line during game. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.33 and 2.90, clean exchange and transfer, high three quarters release, soft hands, somewhat accurate throws, 69 mph positional velo.

Austin Fisher, Tonganoxie, 2019
Fischer is a 5-foot-11 201-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 8.13 60 and has got down the line in 5.20-seconds.  He posted a 78 mph exit velo.  At the plate, tall/balanced stance, simple load, short stride, loose hands, pull side line drives, balanced finish.  Behind the plate, 2.32 to 2.37 pop times, over the top release, somewhat accurate throws, clean catch and transfer, 71 mph positional velo.

Brady Prewitt, C, Raytown South (MO), 2019
Prewitt is a 5-foot-9 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.87 60 and a 5.26 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 76 mph. At the plate, athletic stance with rhythm in load, gap-to-gap approach, solid consistent contact with quick bat speed, stays on ball after contact.  Behind the plate, high three quarters release, pop times between 2.06 and 2.18, somewhat accurate throws, clean catch and throw, 71 mph positional velo.

Connor Jeffers, Burlington, 2018
Jeffers is a physical 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.27 60 and a 4.50 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 85 mph. At the plate, tall stance, slightly open, in line stride, middle to pull contact, balanced finish.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.98 and 2.17, top pop time for the event, over the top release, quick catch and throw, fluid footwork, momentum towards second to throw, mostly accurate throws, 78 mph positional velo, one of the top velos among catchers, had a pair of triples to left field in game action.

Mateo Martinez, Campus, 2019
Martinez is a 6-foot-1 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 6.91 60, one of the top for the event, and a 4.56 home to first.  He has an 84 mph exit velo.  At the plate, athletic set up with no wasted moves in load, short stride, showed some power to pull side, quick hands.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.02 and 2.24, one of the top pop times for the event, quick catch and throw, hands and feet work together, positional velo of 76 mph, one of top velos for the event,  accurate and strong throws to second. 

Robert McKinley, Leavenworth, 2019
McKinley is a 5-foot-11 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.65 60 and has a 4.51 home-to-first.  He posted a 69 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, dives with stride, mostly pull line drives, mostly pull line drives, quick bat speed.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.16, one of the top pop times for the event, 73 mph positional velo, quick feet with clean transfer, over the top release, mostly accurate throws. 

Caleb Ostronic, Eudora, 2018
Ostronic is a 6-foot-1 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 8.50 60 and got down the line in 5.15-seconds.  He has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, thin stance, slightly open, middle to pull line drives, some power to pull side, level bat path.  Behind the plate, 2.26 to 2.42 pop times, 67 mph positional velo, over the top release, clean transfer, fluid footwork, accurate throws to the bag at second.

Jacob Robinette, Basehor Linwood, 2018
Robinett is a 5-foot-10 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.90 60 and has a 4.95 home-to-first time.  His exit velo was 84 mph. At the plate, balanced stance, with controlled movement to back side, quick bat speed, strong hands, power to pull gap, singled to left center gap with hard hit ground ball to second base in game action, Behind the plate, 2.21 to 2.36 pop times, 68 mph positional velo, over the top release, quick catch and throw, fluid footwork, somewhat accurate throws. 

Sean Roseborough, Blue Valley Northwest, 2019
Rosenborough is a 5-foot-11 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2019 class.  He ran a 7.91 60 and a 5.08 home-to-first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo.  At the plate, athletic set up, controlled leg kick, in line stride, level path to extension, middle of the field approach, doubled to left-center in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.07 and 2.74, 68 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, clean transfer with fluid footwork, somewhat accurate throws. 

Lawson Schultz, Buhler, 2018
Schultz is a strong 6-foot 235-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2018 class.  He ran a 7.99 60 and a 5.02 home-to-first. His exit velo was 83 mph. At the plate, simple and repeatable swing, aggressive swing with solid consistent contact during battng practice, quick bat speed, power to pull side, level path, doubled twice and singled twice in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.02 and 2.27, one of the top pop times for the event, positional velo of 72 mph, high three quarters release, momentum through the catch, clean catch and throw. 

Mikey Strong, St. Thomas Aquinas, 2018
Strong is a 6-foot-2 174-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.98 60 and a 4.84 home-to-first.  His exit velo was 87 mph, one of the top for the event.  At the plate, aggressive swing with pop to the pull side, hard solid contact during batting practice, loose hands, body under control, singled up the middle, hard line drive to center during game action.  Behind the plate, pop times of 2.01 to 2.13, one of the top pop times on the day, quick catch and throw with accurate throws at 75 mph, one of the top velos for the event, short jab step working with hands. 

Paul Wendling, Bishop Miege, 2018
Wendling is a 5-foot-8 165-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 6.81 60, one of the top for the event, and has an exit velo of 86 mph, one of the top for the event. At the plate, balanced stance, hands work inside ball, opposite field approach, feel for the barrel, quick bat path, singled to right during game action.. Behind the plate, pop times between 1.99 and 2.06, one of the top pop times for the event,  75 mph positional velo, mostly accurate throws to the bag, quick catch and throw with quick feet and hands.

Jaxson Wentworth, Rockhurst (MO), 2019
Wentworth is a 6-foot 205-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.56 60 and a 5.03 home-to-first.  He posted an 84 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic stance, in line stride, hands work inside ball, gap to gap approach, hard flat contact during batting practice, singled up the middle during game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.27 and 2.38, positional velo of 71 mph, high three quarters release, long arm circle, quick feet with clean exchange, accurate throws to the bag at second.

Nicholas Wheeler, Truman (MO), 2018
Wheeler is a 5-foot-8 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.82 60 and a 5.40 home-to-first.  He has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth load into back side, hands work inside ball, gap to gap approach, feel for the barrel, quick bat path, some pull side power.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.38 and 2.65, 61 mph positional velo, over the top release, clean catch and throw, fluid footwork, somewhat accurate throws.
