Super 60 Spotlight: Austin Young

On Sunday, Feb. 7, Prep Baseball Report will host the 19th edition of its prestigious, flagship event: the Super 60 Pro Showcase. Since the event’s inception in 2003, more than 300 players have been selected in the MLB Draft, including 22 first-round picks and 25 second-rounders.
We started our our march toward the Super 60 earlier this month, by highlighting the prospects set to join us, shining a light on their impressive player profiles that they've groomed through their high school years and beyond.
Scouting Report
Long-limbed, lean-bodied righty with a loose arm and downhill delivery. Projection to body and delivery. Strike thrower with near average arm speed. From a high slot, Young topped at 88 mph, mostly sitting 86 with his fastball. Spin rate in the 2,100s. Slower, but effective breaking ball in the upper-60s which he landed for consistent strikes. When combined with an average 2,440 rpm spin rate, bodes well for future improvement.
Young is a long and lean, athletic actions and a projectable frame with more room for growth at 6-foot-6, 180-pounds. Young’s delivery shows an over the top arm slot, arms and legs coming at the hitter, downhill tilt with his shoulders, repeats at a high percentage, quick arm, loose with whip like action, works aggressively down the mound with explosive movements. At the event, fastball is 82-85 mph, jumps out of his hand, thrown for strikes, curveball is 61-66 mph, mostly gradual action, changeup is 74-78 mph, near fastball arm speed.
Young is a 6-foot-6 180-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri's 2021 class. On the mound, Young comes from a an over the top arm slot, high leg lift, drives with back leg, in line down the mound, keeps shoulders level, has down hill tilt, fastball 83-85 mph, touches 86 mph, high number of strikes, jumps out of hand, sharp movement on breaking ball, 11-to-5 action, will be a good pitch as he continues to throw, 62-63 mph, throws change up with near fastball arm speed, down in the zone, 74-75 mph.
