St. Louis Winter Open Showcase: Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the St. Louis Winter Open Showcase at the Sports Barn in Wentzville, MO on February 8.  Over seventy players in the 2021 to 2024 classes attended.

Today, we will take a look at the catchers from the day.  Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance. Players listed below are in alphabetical order.

Catchers

Lucas Ash C / California , MO / 2021

Ash is a solid and physical 5-foot-9, 185-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. At the event, he ran a 7.88 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 90 mph. At the plate, Ash starts in an upright and athletic stance, some pre-pitch rhythm to his hands, in line stride, flat bat path, repeatable swing, remains balanced throughout, leverages front side, barreled up majority of the balls during round, showed some lift and some pop. Defensively, Ash has a balanced set up, quick actions, quick and clean arm action, over the top release, clean transfers, positional velo of 76 mph with mostly accurate throws and pop times between 1.96 and 2.13 seconds.

Wyatt Brockman C / OF / Marshfield , MO / 2023

Missouri State commit. Brockman is a 6-foot, 185-pound, switch-hitting catching and outfield prospect in Missouri’s 2023 class. He ran a 7.64 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 89 mph. From the right side at the plate, quiet load, quick hands, barrel control, repeatable swing, primarily pull contact with plus pop, from the left side simple weight shift load, quiet hands, barrel control, looks to lift with some pop. In the outfield, clean transfers, short arm action, over the top release, momentum towards target, positional velo of 84 mph, accurate throws. Behind the plate, balanced set up, quick catch to throw, clean transfers, short arm, positional velo of 72 mph, accurate throws, pop times between 2.07-2.22 seconds.

Kaden Byrne C / 1B / Christian Brothers Colege, MO / 2021

Byrne is a 6-foot, 185-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. At the event he ran a 7.15 60 and posted an exit velocity of 87 mph. During batting practice, Byrne starts in an athletic and relaxed stance, minimal load, quiet hands, in line stride, minimal head movement, remains balanced throughout, uphill bat path with a high finish with hands, contact was to the middle and showed plus pop during round. Defensively, Byrne has quick actions, quiet hands, moves well side-to-side, clean transfers, short clean arm stroke, strong arm with a positional velocity of 78 mph, pop times between 2.02 and 2.14 seconds, fairly accurate throws.

Nicholas Fitzanko C / 3B / Parkway West, MO / 2021

Fitzanko is a long and lean 6-foot-1, 170-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. He ran a 7.43 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 81 mph. At the plate, Fitzanko starts with an open stance, smaller leg kick into load, minimal negative movement with hands, in line stride, leverages front side, flat bat path, showed middle and pull side contact during round. Defensively behind the plate, Fitzanko has an athletic set up, clean foot work, strong arm with positional velo of 77 mph, pop times between 2.00 and 2.12 seconds, accurate throws.

Matthew Howard C / 3B / Columbia, IL / 2021

Howard is a 6-foot, 180-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Illinois’ 2021 class. At the event, he ran a 7.33 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 84 mph. At the plate, Howard starts in a balanced stance, small leg lift into load, flat bat path, showed some barrel control and a middle approach during round. Behind the plate, wider set up, clean transfers, momentum towards target, short arm action, high three-quarter release, positional velo of 72 mph with mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.06-2.25 seconds.

Cole Lemons C / RHP / Notre Dame Regional, MO / 2023

Lemons is a long and lean 6-foot-1, 160-pound, right-handed hitting catcher and right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2023 class. He ran a 7.38 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 87 mph. At the plate, Lemons starts slightly open, in line stride, some rhythm to hands, balanced throughout, showed middle to opposite field contact during round. Behind the plate, narrow stance, clean footwork, short quick arm action, high three-quarter release, 74 mph positional velocity, pop times between 2.12-2.14 seconds.

Gabe Luttinen C / SS / Mt Vernon Township , IL / 2023

Luttinen is a 5-foot-9 145-pound right-handed hitting catcher Illinois' 2023 class.  He ran a 7.24 60 and had a 72 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts with a wide stance, short stride, loads with hands, minimal weight shift, level path through the zone with gap to gap approach, stays balanced.  Behind the plate, over the top arm slot, short arm circle, clean transfer, throws are mostly accurate, 72 mph positional velocity, pop times between 2.08 and 2.15 seconds.

Joey Marcinkiewicz C / RHP / Rockwood Summit, MO / 2022

Marcinkiewicz is a lean and long 6-foot-2, 155-pound, right-handed hitting catcher and right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2022 class. He ran a 7.14 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 85 mph. At the plate, slightly closed off stride, leverages front side, leg kick into load, loose hands, balanced throughout swing, produced primarily ground ball contact to the middle and opposite fields during batting practice. Behind the plate, Marcinkiewicz has an athletic set up, clean transfers, quick feet, momentum towards target, three-quarter release, positional velo of 70 mph, pop times between 2.22-2.28 seconds.

TJ Schwartz C / OF / Timberland, MO / 2021

Schwartz is a lean 5-foot-10, 145-pound, right-handed hitting catching prospect in Missouri’s 2021 class. He ran a 7.32 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 78 mph. At the plate, Schwartz starts balanced, slightly crouched over, simple load, minimal hand movement, longer but in line stride, showed some barrel control with a middle to opposite field approach during round. Behind the plate, balanced set up position, clean transfers, short arm action, three-quarter release, positional velocity of 71 mph, very accurate throws to second base, pop times between 2.01 and 2.18 seconds.

Ryan Ulm C / 1B / Fort Zumwalt West, MO / 2022

Ulm has a large frame at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds and is a right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2022 class. At the event he ran a 7.70 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. At the plate, Ulm starts with a wider but balanced stance, minimal load, quiet with hands, in line stride, looks lift the baseball, showed primarily pull side contact during round. Behind the plate, Ulm has a balanced set up, clean footwork, moves well side-to-side for his size, long arm action, momentum towards target, positional velo of 76 mph with mostly accurate throws, high three-quarter release, pop times between 2.10 and 2.22 seconds.

Bryce Williams C / 1B / Wright City, MO / 2024

Williams is a stocky 5-foot-8, 165-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2024 class. He ran a 8.64 60 and posted an exit velocity of 81 mph. During hitting evaluations, Williams has a minimal load, some rhythm to hands, in line stride, leverages front side, showed some control of the barrel, mostly opposite field contact during baseball round. Behind the plate, Williams starts in a relaxed stance, clean transfers, shorter arm action, quick catch to throw, over the top release, positional velocity of 65 mph with mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.28-2.34 seconds.
