St. Louis Preseason ID: Preview

By: Diego Solares
Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri

On Monday, February 20th, the PBR Missouri staff will travel to the Bud Dome in St. Louis, Missouri, to host the inaugural St. Louis Preseason ID. This event is the final ‘Preseason ID’ on our winter calendar and it’ll feature more than 60 players, representing the 2023-to-2026 high school grad classes, from both Illinois and Missouri.

All of our events serve as identifiers to our staff, allowing us to learn more about the prospects in a given area prior to the high school season commencing. We also use these events to help us select rosters for future invite-only events, such as the Preseason All-State, Top Prospect Games, and the illustrious PBR Future Games.

2023 ROSTER PREVIEW

Though a large chunk of this roster is made up of players making their PBR debuts, there are a handful of names set to attend that our staff is fairly familiar with:

+ RHP/OF Brady Coon (Triad, IL, 2024) is a live-armed 6-foot-1, 170-pound athlete to know on a Knights’ squad that’s regularly one of the more competitive 3A teams in our region. Coon impressed our Illinois’ staff at the Chicagoland Open last fall, taking a loud round of BP that included above-average marks at peak (95.7 mph) and on average (87.3 mph). He’s also a 7.01 runner with a 1.65 10-yard split that jumped 31.6 inches on our vertical jump test, further solidifying the caliber of athlete that he is. Coon didn’t throw at that event, but we’ve heard that his fastball has climbed into the upper-80s previously, and we’re looking forward for an up-close look at him next week.

+ Two athletic infielders, both of which are uncommitted juniors, to note on this roster: INF Jake Stedman (Belleville West, IL, 2024) and INF Charlie Isom-McCall (St. Louis University HS, MO, 2024). Stedman represented Team Illinois at the Battle for the Arch, wielding a strong, athletic right-handed swing with noticeable hand speed to pair while producing quality batted ball metrics, 92.5 mph max exit velocity and 343 ft. peak distance, at our events in the past. Isom-McCall showed well at the Top Prospect Games last June as a smooth up-the-middle defender with an above-average run tool to pair. He sprayed line drives from a flat, level bat path in that look, peaking at 92.1 mph and 331 feet, respectively.

+ LHP Landen Patton (Sangamon Valley, IL, 2024) has impressed our Illinois’ staff in the past and is an upside left-hander from the southern part of the state. Patton really gets down the mound, creating noticeable extension on his fastball for his size, and he’s typically sat in the low-80s with it while creating nearly 19 inches of vertical break on average. His curveball, a high-60s offering, spins at 2300+ RPM, and he effectively kills spin on a 74-75 mph changeup thrown from a lower release height than his fastball on average.
