Player Spotlight: C Alex Wheeler (Stockton, 2016)

Alex Wheeler (Stockton, 2016) was just named Second-Team All-State as a catcher in Missouri Class 3. He is a 6'0 175 lb. catcher with a sub-7 60 time and sub-2 pop time.  Wheeler batter .393 this spring with 25 RBI and two home runs.  On June 9, he attended the Class of 2016 Games and is currently playing for Stockton's high school summer team.

Here is a look into the recruiting process of Alex Wheeler.  

PBR: Have you taken any visits, or have any visits scheduled in the near future? If so, what schools, and how recently?

Wheeler: I haven’t taken any visits yet.  I play baseball and basketball so scheduling visits has been tough.  I am hoping to go to more camps this summer and at least get to visit some different campuses.  This will probably not happen until July or August when baseball games and basketball camps have settled down.

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

Wheeler: I am wanting to get a degree in secondary education.  As far as location and size, I am keeping my options open. It would be nice to be close enough for my family to come watch some of my games.  I really just want to find a school that is a good fit for me especially in baseball.  I want to be in an atmosphere that respects the game of baseball and enjoys all the details of it. 

PBR: What were your high school statistics?  Name some players that played a key role in Stockton’s success.

Wheeler: I batted .393 with 25 RBI, 32 runs, 16 stolen bases and two home runs this season.

Stockton is a pitch and defend type of team and couldn’t have had the success we had without our three main pitchers Eli Hubbard, Collin Burns and Austen Hedges.  We ended the season with a team ERA of 1.58.  This made calling pitches much easier.  Colton Brown is a sure handed shortstop who also batted in the three hole.  Our outfield is as good as anyone we played all year and were fun to watch.  The outfield is anchored by Cameron Ramsey.  Jake Wheeler and Garret Burns are also out there.  Our first baseman, Ryan Ankrom, had only 3 errors all season. Brice Bird, Skyler Fishburn and Zakk Burns had to step up when two of our outfielders had a scary collision which moved people around in positions for a while.   I hate to leave anyone out because it really did take everyone to make our team successful.  I think the number of post season honors our team received proves that.  Even our dugout was an important motivator in games all year long.  It made for a fun season.  We won the conference title, district title, and sectionals.  We lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual state champions. 

PBR: What are your goals for your senior season?

Wheeler: Our team goals are to win conference and district.  After losing in the quarterfinals, we are really committed to making it to the Final Four.  The team goal is always to end the season in a dogpile.  Personally, my goals are to step up my game, have quality at bats and give my team a chance to win every game.

PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?

Wheeler: During the summer, our high school team sticks together so I play for Stockton.  We play in the Springfield Area Baseball Association. We will play in the Holiday Tournament in Springfield, MO June 25-27 and in a showcase tournament in Fort Scott, KS on July 9-11.

PBR: Do you play any other sports?

Wheeler: I am the starting point guard for our varsity basketball team.  We have improved our record every year and have a good time together.  We have been playing basketball and baseball together since kindergarten.

PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?

Wheeler: My GPA is a 3.3.  I began taking dual credit courses last year and did well in them. I am glad to have some classes under my belt and I’ll be taking more courses next year.  My ACT was a 20, but planning to take it again.
