O’Brien has flown under the radar so far this season as one of the Draft League’s most disciplined power hitters.

Though he’s batting only .200, O’Brien ranks fifth in the Draft League in pitches per plate appearance (4.5) and fifth in swing-decision rate (65%). He offered a taste of his easy left-handed power back on May 26, when he crushed a fastball 416 feet well over the fence in left-center field.

O’Brien has a knack for punishing changeups, barreling them at an astounding 10% clip. This was on display against the State College Spikes on June 2, when he hammered a changeup 108 mph off the bat to record the top exit velocity against an off-speed pitch so far this season.

O’Brien’s ability to barrel the ball is reflected in his 91.7-mph average exit speed on fly balls and line drives, which, together, account for 54% of his overall contact. Those traits, along with the fact that O’Brien has an optimal average launch angle of 19.2 degrees on hard-hit balls, speak to the 6-foot-4 left-handed hitter’s present power and his potential to unlock even more.
