2015 Underclass Games: Outfield Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Missouri held the 2015 Underclass Games at the University of Missouri on June 16 and June 17. Nearly 90 of the top players in the 2017 and 2018 class attended. The group was divided into three sessions, with two session on June 16 and one session on June 17. Profiles have be updated with times, velos and videos. The games portion of the event can still be viewed on STL Sports Productions. The June 17 games were rained out.
Today we will break down the outfielders from both days. The outfielders are listed in alphabetical order.

Outfielders
Charles Adams, OF, Carl Junction, 2017
Adams is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-hand hitting outfielder. He ran a 60 time of 6.95. He throws from an over-the-top arm slot. Charles has fluid footwork and a clean exchange. His position velo was 75 mph. At the plate, Adams has an athletic setup with a smooth load, dives a bit. He has a level swing that produces gap-to-gap line drives. His exit velo was 77 mph.
Blake Beagle, OF, Pleasant Hill, 2017
Beagle is an athletic 6-foot-1 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2017 class from Pleasant Hill. Beagle ran an event best 6.72 60 and posted an 85 mph exit velo. At the bat, athletic set-up, picks foot up an sets it down to stride, some hand load, fluid rhythm, line drives to middle/pull gap during batting practice. In the outfield, solid defender, quick exchange and release, over-the-top release, quick feet, loose arm action the back spin on baseball, mostly accurate throws, 81 mph positional velo, among the top for the event.
Jackson Berck, OF, Francis Howell Central, 2017
Berck is a 6-foot-0, 185-pound left hand-hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class. He ran a 60 time of 7.78. Over-the-top arm slot, fluid footwork, quick/clean exchange, attacks the ball. Position velo at 78 mph. At the plate, Jackson has an athletic setup with a smooth load. Swing produces gap-to-gap line drives, attacks ball, strong frame. Exit velo was 85 mph, one of the top LHH exit velos of the event.
Dominic Canovi, OF, Marion (IL), 2018
Canovi is a 6-foot-0, 170-pound left-hand hitting outfielder. He ran a 60 time of 7.61. He throws from a high 3/4 arm slot. Canovi has aggressive actions and works through the ball. His position velo was 73 mph. At the plate, Dominic has an athletic setup with a back load. He has an advanced approach. His swing produces gap-to-gap line drives. His exit velo was 80 mph
Brandon Carvan, OF, Raymore-Peculiar, 2018
Carvan is a 5-foot-10 145-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Carvan has a 78 mph exit velo and ran one of the best 60 time in the 2018 class at 6.97. Offensively, balanced set-up, short stride, quick hands, level bat path, showed good feel for the barrel, gap-to-gap approach. During defensive evaluations, over-the-top release, plays through ball, clean exchange, quick release, mostly accurate throws, 79 mph positional velo.
Kobe Cummings, OF, Platte County, 2018
Cummings is a 5-foot-9 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2018 class from Platte County. Cummings runs a 7.16 60 and has a 77 mph exit velo. During batting practice, Cummings started from a balanced set-up, has a small load and short stride. He has a quick bat, short to contact, and a high finish with hands. Defensively, he has a positional velo of 71 mph, mostly accurate throws, high three-quarters release, quick feet, fluid exchange, athletic actions.
Jake Deakins, OF, Hickman, 2018
Deakins is a 6-foot 150-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Deakins has a positional velo of 73 mph and runs a 7.61 60. In the outfield, Deakins makes mostly accurate throws, with a three quarters release, He has a quick release, and works behind the ball before the catch and has loose arm action. At the plate, Deakins starts with an open stance and has a short stride. He showed feel for the barrell, spraying balls gap-to-gap. He has quick bat speed and level bat path through contact.
Conor Dryer, OF, Rockwood Summit, 2017
Dryer is a 6-foot-3 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in the 2017 class from Rockwood Summit. Dryer ran a 6.97 60 and hand an exit velo of 76. At the plate, Dryer starts with an open stance with no wasted movement during load, loose/quick hands, solid contact during batting practice, line drives, gap-to-gap. In the outfield, easy arm action, clean exchange, crow hop, plays through catch, mostly accurate throws, 86 mph positional velo, top for the event.
Matt Duley, OF, Joplin, 2017
Duley is a strong 6-foot 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2017 class from Joplin. Duley ran a 7.16 and had an exit velo of 85 mph. During batting practice, Duley consistently squared up the ball to both gaps. He has little wasted movement during load, uses a short stride and stays through contact with extension. In the outfield, Duley has a positional velo of 83 mph from an over the top release, he has quick feet and quick exchange, making mostly accurate throws.
Gage Dwyer, OF, Fort Zumwalt South, 2018
Dwyer is a 6-foot-0, 185-pound left hand-hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran a 60 time of 7.35. Over-the-top arm slot, fluid footwork, quick/clean exchange. Position velo was 78 mph. At the plate, Dwyer has an athletic setup with a smooth load. Aggressive swing produces gap-to-gap line drives, attacks ball, pull power. Exit velo was 91mph, the top LHH exit velo for the event. Had a triple to CF during the game.
Kole Ficken, OF, Boonville, 2018
Ficken is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound right hand-hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran a 60 time of 7.42. Over-the-top arm slot, fluid footwork, quick/clean exchange, athletic movements. Position velo – 76 mph. At the plate, Ficken has an athletic setup with a smooth load. Level swing produces gap-to-gap line drives, projectable strong frame, aggressive lower half, plus power potential, fast bat speed. Exit velo – 86 mph. He had a hard hit single in the game.
Mason Gipe, OF, Blair Oaks, 2017
Gipe is a well-built, quick-twitch 5-foot-11 195-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Gipe had one of the top 60 times of the event at 6.75 and recorded a 90 mph exit velo, another one of the top for the event. During batting practice, Gipe showed pop to both gaps with repeatable swing mechanics. He starts in an athletic position with a smooth load, short stride and fast bat speed. He has strong/quick hands. In the outfield, Gipe posted another top velo with an 84 mph throw. He has an over-the-top release, crow hop and momentum towards his target. Gipe has quick feet and a clean exchange.
Brett Gonzalez, OF, Rolla, 2018
Gonzalez is a sturdy 5-foot-10 183-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2018 class. Gonzalez posted the top 60 time for the 2018 class with a 6.87 60 and a 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, Gonzalez, has a smooth load and a short stride. He has an aggressive swing with quick hands and fast bat speed. He has a gap-to-gap approach. In the outfield, Gonzalez has a loose over-the-top release with an 82 mph positional velo. He takes a route to get behind the ball and plays through the catch with momentum towards the target. He has a clean exhange and quick release.
Kyle Heckenbach, OF, Smithville, 2017
Heckenbach is a 6-foot 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2017 class. Heckenback ran a 7.23 60 and had an 84 mph exit velo. During hitting evaluations, Heckenbach has a balanced set-up, starts with a reverse toe tap to load, short stride, fluid rhythm. He had consistent solid contact during batting practice with a gap-to-gap approach. In the outfield, Heckenbach over-the-top release with 82 mph throw, one of the best for the event, fluid exchange, plays through the ball, loose arm action. Athletic actions that will continue to improve.
Dalton (Petey) Hill, Of, Lee’s Summit, 2017
Hill is an athletic 6-foot-2 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2017 class. He ran one of the event’s best 60’s at 6.78 and posted one of the event’s best exit velo at 92 mph. During batting practice, Hill has a small leg kick, level path, and fast bat speed. He took an aggressive swing with a gap-to-gap appraoch. In the outfield, Hill had a positional velo of 82 mph, making accurate throws. Has loose arm action, quick feet and quick exchange.
Michael Kolb, OF, Vianney, 2018
Kolb is a 6-foot-0, 150-pound left-hand hitting outfielder. He ran a 60 time of 7.65. He throws from an over-the-top arm slot. Michael has fluid footwork and a clean exchange. His position velo was 65 mph. At the plate, Kolb has an open setup with a smooth load. He has a level swing that produces line drives, middle-to-pull side. His exit velo was 81 mph.
Adam Link, OF, Kickapoo, 2017
Link is a 6-foot-1 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2017 class. Link runs a 7.00 60 and has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, Link starts with an open stance and uses a leg kick, walking away from hands during load. he has a level bat path with quick bat speed, advanced gap-to-gap approach. In the outfield, high three quarters release, mostly accurate throws, fluid footwork, throws downhill, plays through the ball. 82 mph positional velo.
Jake Lynn, OF, Rockhurst, 2017
Lynn is a 5-foot-9 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2017 class. Lynn has an exit velo of 82 mph and runs a 7.46 60. During batting practice, Lynn has a middle approach, balance set up, short stride, leevel bat path. In the outfield, high three quarters release, mostly accurate throws, crow hop, plays through ball, 77 mph positional velo.
Ben Mattes, OF, Liberty North, 2017
Mattes is a 6-foot-3 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2017 class. Mattes runs a 7.34 60 and has an 83 mph exit velo. He put together a good round batting practice, squaring up the ball to the middle of the field. He has a simple smooth load with short stride, quick bat speed and level path, gap-to-gap approach. In the outfield, Mattes makes has a high three-quarters release, fluid footwork and clean exchange, works behind the ball, 75 mph positional velo.
Tyler West, OF, Linbergh, 2018
West is a 6-foot 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in the 2018 class. West runs a 7.27 60 and has an exit velo of 69 mph. At the plate, West has an athletic setup with a smooth load. Swing produces gap-to-gap line drives. Exit velo at 81 mph In the outfield, West has 73 mph positional velo, small crow hop, over-the-top release, fluid exchange, mostly accurate throws.
Nicholas Zeitlow OF, Boonville, 2017
Zeitlow is a 6-foot-5, 180-pound right hand-hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class. He ran a 60 time of 7.28. Over-the-top arm slot, loose arm action, fluid footwork, quick/clean exchange. Position velo was 80 mph. At the plate, Zeitlow has an athletic setup with a smooth load. Swing produces gap-to-gap line drives, plus opposite field power potential, fast bat speed. Exit velo at 85 mph.
