Western Wisocnsin Open: Position Player Analysis

The Western Wisconsin Open took place on July 13th at Carson Park in Eau Claire, WI. 31 players took place in a pro style workout in front of the PBR Scouting Staff. Today we start the analysis with the position player reports from the event.
2017 SS Tyler Flamme of Wisconsin Heights stood out during workouts. Flamme is a 6.95 runner with a strong arm across the infield (82 mph) and an all-district honorable mention. He is currently ranked No. 70 in the Wisconsin Class of 2017.
Scouting Reports (Alphabetical Order)
Adrian Bethel, OF/RHP, Eau Claire Memorial, 2017
6-foot-1, 203-pound two-way player, some strength. On the mound works with a tall and fall delivery, gets out over front side aggressively. Long firm arm action, high ¾ slot. Fastball topped at 81 mph, sat 78-80 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, flashed late action, 71-73 mph. Changeup showed arm side run, fastball arm speed, 74-76 mph. Right-handed hitter, open stance, slight arm bar load, short stride back to even. Some bat strength, average bat speed, level path, 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively plays with a long arm action from the outfield, high ¾ slot, 84 mph from the outfield. Footwork is long strided and fluid, showed ability to play through the baseball. 7.48 runner in the 60.
Brett Bradison, C/OF, De Pere, 2019
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting C/OF with a lanky frame. At the plate hits from a tall, slightly closed stance. Short stride with good balance. Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm and a short swing path. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.32. Behind the plate has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Quick transfer and release, stand and throw. Popped 2.19-2.26 and threw 64 mph from the crouch. Showed soft hands receiving in bullpens. Took drills in the outfield as well throwing 70 mph.
Byron Brown, 2B, Parkview, 2017
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting second baseman. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly closed stance with a short stride and average balance. Pull hitter with a long swing path. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.85. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 68 mph across the infield.
Isaac Colbert, C, Altoona, 2018
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitting catcher. At the plate hits from an open stance with a leg kick stride and average balance. Line drive hitter with a level swing path. 69 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.59. Defensively has a short, loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Comes out of crouch early during pops.
Jacob Fentress, C, Eau Claire Memorial, 2019
6-foot-3, 170-pound catcher, lanky frame, lean thin build, projects. 7.39 runner in the 60. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, linear lower half. Loose hands, short level path, shows upside with the bat. 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively gets out of the chute with lanky actions, 2.10-2.26 pop times out of the crouch. Arm plays with a longer action, over the top slot, 75 mph out of the crouch.
Tyler Flamme, SS, Wisconsin Heights, 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with a strong, athletic frame. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws showed carry across the infield at 82 mph. Athletic actions with average hands. Solid on the run thru. At the plate hits from a spread out, slightly open stance. Short stride back to even with good explosion in the lower half. Gap to gap hitter with a long swing path and fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 92 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 6.95.
Samuel Gauger, OF, Brookfield East, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound left-handed hitting outfielder with a strong, athletic frame. At the plate hits from a tall, balanced setup with a quick leg lift stride and average balance. Gap to gap hitter with a short uphill swing path and fluid rhythm. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Plays thru the ball with athletic actions and a quick, clean transfer. Fluid footwork, arm plays up with a quick release and accuracy. Threw 79 mph from the outfield.
Logan George, 2B, Pulaski, 2017
6-foot-2, 200-pound infielder, average balanced frame. Right-handed hitter, hits from a balanced stance, short leg lift stride, average balance. Some bat strength present, flashes pull side power approach, rigid actions. 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.24 runner in the 60. Defensively arm plays from a short firm arm action, high ¾ slot, 67 mph across the infield. Plays deep, feet are fast enough to play more aggressively through the baseball.
Reid Hansen, C, Durand, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher. At the plate hits from a wide base with a drop load and heel lift stride. Slightly uphill swing path. 67 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.64. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Quick exchange with average hands. Popped 2.26-2.34 and threw 70 mph from the crouch.
Grant Hill, RHP/3B, Wausau West, 2018
5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed hitting RHP/3B with a strong frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with regular effort and smooth rhythm. Fastball flashed sinking action at 76-78 topping out at 79 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape at 61-64 mph. Maintains arm speed on changeup at 66-68 mph. At the plate hits from a wide base with a smooth load and heel lift stride. Line drive hitter with a level swing path and fluid rhythm. Flashed some power with a fast bat. 76 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.61. Defensively has a short, loose arm action form a high ¾ slot. Accurate throws across the infield throwing 75 mph. Plays thru the ball with a clean exchange.
Blake Kretovics, 1B, New Richmond, 2018
6-foot-4, 200-pound left-handed hitting first baseman. Only took part in batting practice. Hits from a crouched, wide base with a short heel lift stride. Pull hitter with an uphill swing path, showed strength thru contact in batting practice. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Above average runner for his size running a 6.98.
Justin Lau, C, Altoona, 2019
5-foot-7, 130-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a small frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a leg kick stride and average balance. Long, uphill swing path with fluid rhythm. 73 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.68. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Raises up early receiving in drills. Popped 2.27-2.58 and threw 68 mph from the crouch.
Carson Lemanski, OF/RHP, Eau Claire North, 2017
5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitting OF/RHP with a small, athletic frame. Above average runner in the 60 running a 6.82 60 yard dash. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a short stride and average balance. Line drive gap to gap hitter with a short swing path. 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a short, loose arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry at 82 mph from the outfield. Plays thru the ball with athletic actions and quick, fluid footwork. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a square landing. Fastball sat 77-78 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with short breaking action at 65-69 mph. Fastball arm speed on changeup with some downer action at 71-74 mph.
Paul Maguire, C, Marshfield, 2017
5-foot-11, 185-pound catcher, solid average build. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, can get more out of lower half. Bat path is long, pull side approach with some pop, long high finish. 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm plays from a short over the top arm action, 73 mph arm strength out of the crouch. Can get rid of it quicker out of the crouch, 2.30-2.44 pop times. 7.38 runner in the 60.

5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting third baseman with a small, lanky frame. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Accurate throws across the diamond at 68 mph. Plays thru the ball with a quick, clean exchange and soft hands. At the plate hits from an open stance with a short heel lift stride and average balance. Line drive hitter with a long swing path. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.29.
Payton Nelson, OF/LHP, Wausau West, 2017
5-foot-9, 185-pound right-handed hitting OF/LHP with a strong frame. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Accurate throws with carry throwing 85 mph form the outfield. Athletic actions, playing thru the ball with a quick, clean exchange and soft hands. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a short stride and good balance. Gap to gap hitter with a level swing path and fluid rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 90 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.11. on the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a short leg lift to balance point. Works in line with home plate, falls to third base side on release. Fastball flashed cutting action at 78-80 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape with tight rotation at 63-66 mph. Changeup showed sinking action at 60-63 mph.
Ryley Orszula, 1B, Wilmot, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting first baseman, longer frame. Balanced stance, leg kick stride, linear lower half, average balance. Bat path works long on uphill path, slight pull side approach. 83 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm plays long and loose, over the top slot, showed accuracy to bases, 74 mph across. Clean exchange and round, reliable hands around the bag. 7.64 runner in the 60.

5-foot-10, 185-pound right-handed hitting first baseman with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a short stride and average balance. Line drive, pull hitter with an uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.55. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Accurate throws across the infield. Fluid footwork with good feel around the bag. Threw 70 mph across the infield.

5-foot-9, 190-pound third baseman, stocky build. Right-handed hitter, slightly open stance, short stride, maintains average balance. Long path to the baseball, slight wrap at load, 77 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm plays from over the top slot, 69 mph across the infield. 8.25 runner in the 60.

5-foot-7, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with a short stride and collapse on the backside. Short, uphill swing path. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top arm slot with a long exchange. Threw 78 mph from the outfield.

6-foot, 195-pound third baseman, carries some present strength, likely to build more. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, average balance. Path has some length, barrel gets casted, made some line drive contact to pull side. 78 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively showed playable hands, plays the ball deep. Footworks keeps him at third base, 7.63 runner in the 60. Arm action is loose, plays from a high ¾ to ¾ slot, 66 mph across the diamond.

6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with a lanky, athletic frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and leg kick stride. Fluid rhythm with good balance. Smooth rhythm working in line with home plate. Fastball has sinking action at 74-75 topping out at 77 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with gradual action at 66-68 mph. Fastball arm speed on changeup with running action at 72-75 mph. At the plate hits from an open stance with an arm bar load and leg kick stride. Fluid rhythm with a long, uphill swing path and fluid rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.17. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Long exchange. Threw 78 mph from the outfield. Threw 75 mph across the infield.
Nick Waldorf, 3B, Stoughton, 2018
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitting third baseman. At the plate hits from an open stance with a short leg lift stride. Line drive hitter with a long swing path. Showed strength through contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.02. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high 3.4 slot. Accurate throws across the infield throwing 70 mph. Slower actions with a compact exchange.
Dane Weiland, C/RHP, Chippewa Falls, 2019
Strong build for his age, 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting two way player. On the mound showed well above average arm strength for his age. Arm works works long and firm, high ¾ slot, regular effort. Lands square, has direction, uses slide step from the stretch. Fastball is mostly straight, 77-78 mph, touched 79 mph, velocity dipped to 73-75 in the stretch. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 66-70 mph, gradual action. Changeup flashed arm side fade, mostly straight, 68-70 mph. Defensively arm played long out of the crouch, accurate to second, 72 mph. Pop times ranged 2.30-2.44. At the plate hits from a balanced stance, short stride, good balance. Showed bat strength for his age, fast bat, pull side tendency, hits in rhythm. 80 mph exit velocity from the tee. Ran the 60 at 7.25.

5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed hitting catcher with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with short heel lift stride. Pull power hitter with an uphill path and fast bat. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Accurate throws with carry. Fluid footwork with average hands. Popped 2.08-2.15 and threw 74 mph form the crouch.
