Quick Hits: Midwest ProCase

David Seifert & Steve Nielsen
Director of College Scouting & Senior VP of Baseball Operations

On Tuesday, June 21st, the PBR Illinois staff traveled to Triton College in River Grove, Illinois, to host the PBR ProCase - Midwest. This event served as a kick off to identifying the top prospects in the 2023 draft class along with select 2022 prospects. With the MLB draft in July, this was one of the first events of the summer that turned pro scouts' attention directly toward the 2023 class.

Now, at the event’s conclusion, our scouts have compiled nuggets of information on those in attendance that you’ll find within this ‘Quick Hits’ piece. Read below for in-depth notes from Tuesday’s ProCase - Midwest.

A few notable position players stood out at this week’s ProCase, and one in particular was the left-handed stick of OF Brayden Bakes (Huntley, IL, 2023, Wichita State) who showed off a high level hit tool in both BP and in live at-bats. Director of College Scouting David Seifert called Bakes “The top position player at this year’s ProCase…Very good present strength on a compact 5-foot-10, 180 pound frame. Compact swing, ball jumps off his barrel with late violence to his swing. Also stood out with his arm strength and run speed. Runs fairly loose for his strong build/body type.” Bakes put up a flashy set of numbers too, posting a 6.67 in the 60 to go along with a 99.5 max exit velocity and hitting the longest ball of BP at 389’.

Left-handed hitting catcher Dominc Kibler (New Berlin West, WI, 2023, Kent State) made his presence felt in live at bats. David Seifert noted, “One of the top position players at this year’s ProCase. 5-foot-8, 180-pound strong bodied catcher produced hard, consistent contact during game play with a loud single to right field and a long home run to right center among his live at-bats. The left handed batter with a slight dive stride also barreled the baseball during BP, producing a 99.3 EV as his top bolt.”

SS Louisville commit, Alex Alicea (St. Thomas More, WI, 2023) is a handsy and dynamic middle infielder who posted a 6.54 in the 60 yard dash and uses that as a highlight of his game. For what Alicea lacks in power out of his 5-foot-8, 150-pound frame,  he makes up for with bat control from both sides of the plate. One of the better bat to ball performances of the day in live at bats, Alicea profiles as a tough strikeout victim at the top of the order.

Uncommitted R/R two-way player Dominci Voegele (Columbia, IL, 2023) showed some intriguing upside to our staff including David Seifert, “The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder excelled on the bump, showing an 89-91 mph fastball and above average 74-76 curve. Also showed a feel for a mid-80s changeup. Filled the zone with his heater and breaker with a longer, continuous arm path and good direction and extension to the plate. Lower effort delivery with high three-quarter release point. Higher ceiling arm with all things considered, including his athleticism, delivery and projectable frame.”

RHP Michael Miller (St. Thomas Academy, MN, 2023, Ohio State), is physically impressive on the mound at 6-foot-4, 205-pounds. Even more impressive is what Seifert called a “plus curveball as his best pitch. Quick arm spun a 77-79 mph hard breaker with tight spin in the 2700s.” Miller sets it up with a 88-90 mph fastball that flashed some two-seam sink.

RHP Josh McDevitt (Effingham, IL, 2023, Missouri) threw one of the more polished innings of the day. Seifert noted, “Ball comes out of his hand really well from a three-quarter release point. Strike-thrower who repeated delivery with moderate effort. Filled zone and worked back/forth with a 90-91 (T92) mph fastball and an average 80-81 changeup for consistent strikes.”
