Midwest ProCase: Catcher Analysis

The Midwest ProCase took place on July 11th at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Illinois. The event featured players from ten surrounding states. Today we kick off event analysis with the catcher scouting reports. Jacob Campbell (Janesville Craig, WI) continued his rise this summer showing advanced catch and throw skills and power potential at the plate.


Catcher Scouting Reports (Listed Alphabetically)

Zyon Avery, C, Ben Davis HS, IN
Ohio University recruit, currently ranked No. 35 in Indiana’s 2018 class. 6-foot-2, 225-pound right-handed hitting catcher, extra-large frame with strong lower half and wide shoulders. Showed flashes of big right-handed pull-side power in BP. Strong, loose hands, generates bat speed and loft, ball jumps off the barrel with carry. Registered 100 mph exit velocity with wood. Defensively, recorded pop times ranging between 1.93-2.04. Above-average arm strength, 78 mph from the crouch. Moves well for size, ran a 7.22 laser-time 60.

Jacob Campbell, C, Janesville Craig HS, WI
Illinois commit. Currently ranked No. 5 in Wisconsin and No. 111 in the PBR Overall Ranks. 6-foot, 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a strong, durable frame and strength in the forearms and lower half. One of the top defensive backstops in the Midwest. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Quick out of the crouch with fluid footwork, gains ground towards second base. Active blocker. Popped 1.87-1.98 and threw 80 mph from the crouch. Accurate throws with carry. Offensively, crouched slightly open setup. Short toe tap stride with good balance. Line drive hitter works gap to gap with a short, level swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 97 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.11. 

 

Jeff Holtz, C, Arrowhead HS, WI
Indiana commit. Currently ranked No. 4 in the Wisconsin Class of 2018 and no. 109 in the PBR Overall Ranks. 6-foot-4, 207-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a strong upper half. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and short leg lift stride. Lower half works well, fast bat. Line drive, pull hitter. Strength thru contact with 99 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.01. Defensively behind the plate has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Throws have carry out of the crouch, threw 79 mph. Popped 1.95-2.05. 

Nicholas Juaire, C/INF, Lakeville North HS, MN
Texas Christian recruit, currently ranked No. 312 overall, No. 4 in Minnesota’s 2018 class. 5-foot-8, 175-pound switch-hitting catcher with compact, strong frame. Legitimate switch-hitter, repeats swing from both sides. Balanced, aggressive approach, quick hands, consistent hard line drives to all fields, swing works with rhythm, strong through the ball, gets off his backside well. In game, went 2-for-3 with a two-run single, the only player to have multiple hits at the Midwest ProCase. Registered 95 mph exit velocity from the right side, 96 from the left side. Highly athletic feet for catcher, ran a 6.94 laser-timed 60. Ultra-quick glove-to-hand transfer and release, recorded pop times ranging between 1.79-1.97, erratic around the bag. Throws carry to the bag, 78 mph from the crouch. Also was clocked at 91 mph from shortstop.

Chase Stanke, C, Marmion HS, IL
Recently de-committed from Arkansas and is back on the market. Currently ranked No. 251 overall, No. 8 in Illinois’ 2018 class. Projectable 6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed hitting catcher, athletic build with wide shoulders and room for continued physical development. Delivered strong all-around performance at the Midwest ProCase. More known for his loose, athletic left-handed swing, Stanke showed extremely well behind the plate. Displayed quick directional footwork, quick and clean glove-to-hand transfer, highly accurate throws with easy carry through the bag, clocked at 80 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged between 1.93-1.97, all strikes to second base. Offensively, generates easy bat speed with his hands, pull-side approach with projectable power, rhythm in load, inconsistent swing path. Registered 90 mph exit velocity with wood. Also ran a 7.45 laser-timed 60.

Ryan Wrobleski, C, Eden Prairie HS, MN
Uncommitted, currently ranked No. 12 in Minnesota’s 2018 class. 6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher, lean/athletic build with room for continued added strength. Tall, balanced setup, consistent hard contact with lift, maintains balance through contact. Registered 93 mph exit velocity. Defensively, received and blocked well in games, confident receiver. Above average arm strength, 76 mph from the crouch, clean exchanges and athletic feet, longer arm action. Pop times ranged between 2.00-2.08, mostly on target. Ran a 7.40 laser-timed 60.
