outfield EVALUATIONS

Brett Bateman, OF/LHP, Mounds View, 2020
5-foot-8, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.16 runner. Tall balanced stance with knee to knee trigger, shows hard line drive contact to middle of field, stays on and through baseball well. 82 mph exit velocity. Solid in outfield with above avg. arm, works through ball, has footwork and sure hands, shows actions in field and covers ground well, 84 mph arm from outfield. Bateman did not have the highest velocity at the event, but he presented himself as a more polished left-hander with a quick arm who could make a jump as his frame matures. Currently 5-foot-8, 145-pounds, the young looking southpaw sat 79-80 with his fastball which he threw to the bottom of the zone. He showcased some feel for a changeup with arm side life at 72-75, but it was his curveball that set him apart. Thrown with fastball hand speed, and featuring tight, two-tier break and 1/7 shape, Bateman’s curveball has a chance to be a weapon moving forward. He throws the pitch with confidence at 67-69, and as he continues to get stronger, he may throw it harder in the future. Still a bit further away given his size, Bateman’s quick arm and feel for the curveball makes him an interesting arm to follow, especially since he is a left-hander.

Carter Baumler, RHP/OF, Dowling Catholic (IA), 2020
Baumler’s athleticism stood out at the event, and given his long frame and strong arm, he will likely be one of the more talked about recruits throughout the summer. Standing 6-foot-2, 187-pounds with lean strength throughout, Baumler comfortably touched 90 mph with his fastball without so much as breaking a sweat. Working linear down the mound with a still-head at release, Baumler delivered fastballs at 89-90 out of a high ¾ slot without much use of his lower-half. The pitch featured heavier arm side life at times, and he was able to routinely throw it to the bottom of the zone. His slider was tight at 77-79, and looks to be a future out pitch moving forward. It was thrown with fastball hand speed, and featured shorter, late-breaking action. Also a 6.81-runner in the 60-yard dash and an excellent defender in the outfield, Baumler’s athleticism should allow him to continue making quick advancements in coming years. At the plate, the right-handed hitter has a simple approach with a short stride that allows his hands to work the barrel fast, uphill through the zone with strength. Still a bit raw, he should be even better by the time the Future Games rolls around in August. Overall, Baumler is certainly one of the top athletes in the class, and as he continues to get more game action against higher level competition, expect him to blossom into one of the better prospects as well.

Jon Bell, OF, St. Cloud Cathedral, 2021
5-foot-10, 170-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. 6.87 runner. Open stance, body load into linear stride, uses lower half in swing, simple load, repeats swing well, gap to gap approach with hard line drive contact to middle of field, 84 mph exit velocity. Decent athlete with solid glove skills, plays through ball, accurate to bag, short arm action, 82 mph arm from outfield. Follow in 2021 class.

Andrew Christopherson, OF, Totino-Grace, 2020
6-foot, 172-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. 6.9 runner. Square stance, preset load, slight weight shift to swing, low hand slot, lift in swing plane, avg. spray contact with flashes of hard pull ground balls, 80 mph exit velocity. Active feet, aggressive routes, avg. direction on throws, short arm action, avg. accuracy to target, 72 mph arm from outfield.

Hunter Day, RHP/OF, Bloomington Jefferson, 2020
6-foot-2, 163-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Day’s short, quick arm makes the ball look like its gets on the plate quicker than the radar gun may read. He is aggressive down the mound which also helps the fastball play up even harder. The pitch cut, somewhat, at 82-84, and he countered it with an advanced, power-changeup that was thrown with fastball hand speed and featured late sinking action at 78-79. He also featured a tighter slider at 74-75 with short break that has a chance to be an above average pitch moving forward. Standing 6-foot-2, 165-pounds, Day has wiry strength on an athletic frame, and should continue to fill out in the future. Day’s velocity will likely be up even higher this summer as his arm continues to get into shape throughout the spring. 7.12 runner with 80 mph exit velocity and 86 mph arm from outfield. Open stance, leg kick trigger, some length to contact, athletic in box with hard contact to middle of field. Aggressive routes in field, above avg. arm, plays through ball, raw with 2 hands to field, accurate with carry to target.

Brant Dickison, OF/RHP, Rochester John Marshall, 2020
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.2 runner. Square stance with leg kick trigger, rolling hand load, avg. rhythm in swing, some stiffness through contact, spray contact across whole field, 77 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, heavier feet with avg. glove, low ¾ arm slot, sinking action on throws, 77 mph arm from outfield.

Sam Emmerich, OF, Prior Lake, 2020
5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Strong compact build. 7.07 runner. Square stance, slight rhythm in hands, knee to knee trigger, line drive swing plane with lift through baseball, pull approach, flashed hard contact, present strength with pop in bat, 89 mph exit velocity. Plays through baseball, comfortable in field, fields with 2 hands effecting balance and direction, clean arm action, solid carry and accuracy to target, 79 mph arm strength from outfield. Strong follow in 2020 class.

Rodney Erickson, OF/RHP, Woodbury, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.15 runner. Athletic balanced stance, body load, lower hand slot, looks to elevate baseball, flashing of hard contact with potential pop in bat, worked mostly mid/away, 85 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes, sure hands, clean high ¾ arm action, creates direction with feet, solid accuracy and carry to target, 81 mph arm from outfield.

Lucas Flemming, OF/RHP, Edina, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.07 runner. Open stance, preset hands, slight leg lift trigger, flashes hard line drive contact, mid/pull approach, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid/avg. actions in field, covers routine balls, sure hands, avg. momentum through baseball, short arm action, accurate to target, 77 mph arm from outfield.

Jaecan Fratzke, OF, Rochester Century, 2021
5-foot-8, 135-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.2 runner. Open stance, slight body and hand load, minimal rhythm in swing, lower hand slot creating flat line drive swing plane, spray contact to both sides of field, 73 mph exit velocity. Plays through ball, sure hands, follows throws, accurate to bag, short arm action, needs improvement in arm strength, 69 mph arm strength from outfield.

Sean Goldman, RHP/OF, Mound View, 2020
6-foot-1, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.00 runner. Square stance, long stride, choppy rhythm, line drive swing plane, loses posture through swing, spray contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Long lean frame in field, long clean arm action, covers ground well, sure hands and projects defensively, 80 mph arm from outfield.

Carter Hanson, LHP/OF, Bloomington Jefferson, 2021
6-foot-2, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Long lean athletic frame with wiry strength. Strong follow in MN 2021 class. 7.08 runner. Square stance, body load, early rhythm in hands, clean path, line drive and fly ball contact, some stiffness to 2 hand finish, flashes pull-side pop, gap to gap approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet and plays with energy in field, shows athleticism, above avg. arm action, clean and loose, accurate with carry to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield.

Lucas Henderson, OF, Rosemount, 2020

Physical frame in field, solid athlete, works through ball, has footwork, sure hands to field, accurate to target with avg. carry on throws, 81 mph arm from outfield.

David Janssen, OF/LHP, Centennial, 2020
5-foot-9, 140-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.56 runner. Open stance, rolls into hitting position, spray hitter, mostly pull, with flashes of hard contact to right side of field, 69 mph exit velocity. Aggressive fielder, works through ball, accurate to target, solid/avg. actions, 76 mph arm from outfield.

Noah Juliar, OF, Burnsville, 2020
5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Juliar did not get cheated at the plate, and with aggressive hips and a stronger bottom hand, he stroked balls from gap to gap during batting practice. The 5-foot-9, 155-pound outfielder ran a 6.99 60-yard dash, and then showed off some twitch at the plate. Allowing his hands to rock down and back freely with a knee-knock stride, Juliar’s barrel showcased some lag through the zone on an uphill plane as his quick hands drove it to the ball. Because the hands show enough quickness, and he has some strength, Juliar is an intriguing player to follow moving forward. Shows above avg. actions and ability in outfield, plays with quickness, works through ball, has solid athleticism, with accurate arm to target with carry at 82 mph. Strong follow in 2020 class.

Konnor Kirchoffner, RHP/OF, Burnsville, 2020
Ranked #109 in PBR Overall Rankings for the 2020 class nationally. Kirchoffner was one of my favorite underclass arms at this event a year ago, and he was even more impressive on this day. An inch taller at 6-foot-2, and 20 pounds heavier at 190-pounds, Kirchoffner looked the part of a future starter at the next level during his bullpen session. He pounded the zone with his fastball at 87-88 remaining compact throughout his delivery before throwing over a high front shoulder. I found the stride to be a bit shorter, but that only leaves room for him to get even greater use out of his legs which should allow for his velocity to bump up even higher moving forward. Almost ripping the ball out of his mitt, Kirchoffner’s quicker arm swing gave way to a quick hand out of a high ¾ slot. There is some effort out front, but he remains linear throughout while getting extended to the plate. He pounded the zone and exhibited feel for an above average changeup at 73-76 that featured late-fading action. His curveball had tight spin with sharp break in 11/5 shape. He spun it with intent and confidence and it has a chance to be a swing and miss pitch moving forward. With the feel that he shows for three pitches and with more velocity on the way, expect Kirchoffner to be closely followed throughout the spring and summer by college recruiters. Along with his performance on the mound; Kirchoffner ran a 7.02 60, posted an 86 mph exit velocity, and was 89 mph from the outfield. Tall and athletic in box, leg lift trigger, clean swing plane, utilizes a mid/pull approach, and shows ability to drive the baseball to pull side of field. Moves well in field, long strides, fields in rhythm, and showcases an above avg. arm from the outfield.

Maxwell Kohlhepp, OF/RHP, Forest Lake, 2020
5-foot-7, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.51 runner. Square balanced stance, deeper load, length to contact, slashy line drive swing, gap to gap approach, fly ball contact, with avg. pop in bat, 74 mph exit velocity. Quick in field, aggressive routes, sure hands, has carry on throws, clean arm action, avg. carry to target, 80 mph arm from outfield.

Gavin Lund, OF, Farmington, 2020
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Projectable build that will continue to add strength. 7.28 runner. Open stance, leg kick trigger, shoulder load, looks to elevate, stays inside baseball, flashes hard contact, gap to gap approach with present strength, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid athleticism, plays through ball, sure hands, follows throws, above avg. arm, accurate with carry to target, 85 mph arm from outfield. Follow in 2020 class.

Logan Milene, OF, Rochester Century, 2020
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.09 runner. Tall balanced stance, easy load and stride, repeats swing well, line drive path with lift through contact, consistent hard contact, gap to gap hitter, with flashes of pop in bat, 82 mph exit velocity. 83 mph arm from outfield with accuracy and carry to target, solid actions, above avg. glove, plays through ball and has momentum on throws. Strong follow in 2020 class.

Jacob Mrosko, OF/RHP, Chanhassen, 2020
Mrosko touched 87 mph in his bullpen after going through the full workout as an outfielder, and I think there is much more velocity on the way in the future. Tall stance with deeper load, varying swing plane, aggressive swinger, hard pull contact, tends to flare oppo. Athletic in field, long strides, covers ground, well above avg. arm with carry and accuracy to target. Still trying to sync up with the long limbs that his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame holds, he could have a chance to make a big jump as he becomes more comfortable with the new movement patterns. He ran a 7.01 60-yard dash, and has wiry-athleticism throughout his frame. On the mound, he stepped slightly across his body as his loose arm worked freely in the back before delivering out of a high ¾ slot. Though his curveball was thrown slower at 66-68, it did take multi-tier shape, and has a chance to develop even more in the future. He tended to cut his changeup. Given the fact that he is still figuring out how his long limbs move, and the fact that he should be able to add a significant amount of strength, Mrosko is a player to follow moving forward.

Nathan Osborne, OF, New Prague, 2020
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Compact physical frame. 6.95 runner. Athletic in field, aggressive routes, solid/avg. glove, above avg. arm with quickness and carry to target, 85 mph arm strength from outfield. Follow in 2020 class.

Cade Pavek, OF, New Prague, 2020
