Jordan Jones 3B / 1B / Detroit Edison, MI / 2024

ECORSE - The 13-hour distance to Mississippi Valley State was a bit concerning at first, but in the long run it is for the best according to Jordan Jones.

“My mom was worried thinking about it,” the Detroit Edison senior admitted. “But we came together and she said wherever I decided to go that she supported me.”

Soon after the eighth-rated 2024 third baseman in Michigan was a commit to the Southwestern Athletic Conference university.

“They had me on a visit after seeing me play in Chicago,” reflected Jones, who credited Ecorse coach Drew Covington with helping make the connection. “The staff was awesome. They had some great energy. I met the players and they made me feel at home.”

An offer was presented on the visit but it wasn’t until a couple weeks later that a decision was made.

“The weather,” Jones pointed to as another plus in going to school located near Itta Bena, Miss. “I want to develop my game to get to the highest level and that’s a place I think I can do it.”

There were visits to Central Michigan and Illinois along with interest from Kansas State, Henry Ford, Adrian and Lansing CC during a recruiting process that began three years ago.

“It started in ninth grade when I went to a showcase in Detroit and there were a bunch of scouts there,” Jones related. “It was kind of rough at first, I wanted to get to the Division I level and not too many get to that point. I talked with a couple coaches my sophomore and junior years and this summer started talking with a lot more coaches and getting on visits.

“But it was still rough,” Jones continued. “A lot of other kids were committed. PBR gave me the exposure I needed, posting my videos and shouting me out and getting me exposure to coaches.”

Mississippi Valley came away impressed with what they saw in the 95th-ranked senior in Michigan.

“They like the way I swing the bat,” Jones explained. “My hitting is what brought them in to see me. They also like the way I picked the ball in the infield. I feel they can help me develop and improve, the process of me getting better.”

Improvement to this point was vital in colleges taking an interest in the 6-0 191-pounder.

“I’ve worked extremely hard,” Jones said. “The coaches here push me to be the best I can be. To get to the Division I level you have to work hard every day. I’ve sacrificed to get to this level. I take no days off.”

The desire to play after high school began at a young age.

“I’ve wanted to play college baseball since I started playing baseball at four-years-old,” Jones noted. “My mom pushed me and I started developing at the age of eight or nine. When I was 12 or 13 I realized I could get to the next level. I started seeing guys at Edison and all the work that they put in. Seeing them work hard, I believed if I did that I could make it. I have as much talent as everyone else.”

In addition to his mother and Covington, Jones pointed to the coaching staff at Detroit Edison, Mark Brown, Vaughn Calloway, Will Lewis, Kenneth Williams, Mark Brown Jr. and Stan Allen with playing a major part of his development and recruitment in becoming a college commit.

“It was the best feeling I could ask for when I committed,” Jones said. “It’s a blessing to be able to go to the next level. I get to go to college to play the game I love.”

Plans are to major in business and marketing according to the 18-year-old, a 3.5 student at Edison ready for the challenges ahead.

“I look forward to exceeding in life,” Jones concluded. “I want to be the best player I can be. Everyone has the goal to get to the major leagues, you just have to take it step by step to get there.”
