Fox Finds College Home At Ohio University

ROCHESTER HILLS - Check another goal off the list of Sean Fox. The Rochester High School junior is a college commit to Ohio University.

“I always set goals and it’s been a goal of mine for a long time,” Fox said. “Make varsity as a freshman and I did that. Be team captain and I did that. Be committed to a D-I school and now I did that. My next goal after college is to try and play pro ball.”

That is a ways off yet for the top-ranked 2025 third baseman in Michigan, who credits reaching a different goal with helping the cause in being seen by schools like Ohio U.

“They saw me at the Future Games,” Fox reflected. “That was a big goal of mine, to get to the Future Games. I knew it would be a big part of my recruitment.”

Contact with the Mid-American Conference coaches at OU began in August soon after the PBR event.

“They reached out one or two times a week to get to know me, and then they got me to go there on Oct. 8,” Fox explained. “I went in open-minded, it was my first visit with a tour. I really liked the feel, it was a cool campus and I liked the country part of it. All of it was super close within walking distance. The coaches were nice and the facilities were nice.”

A commitment was the obvious thing to do in the eyes of Fox, who also had interest from Western Michigan, Oakland, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Toledo.

“Before the rule change I wasn’t in contact with anybody,” Fox related. “The biggest thing was I switched teams in the summer to the South Oakland As and that helped me get more exposure. Tons of teams were at their games so I was on their radar.

“Once Aug. 1 hit I got some calls, nothing I didn’t like. But PBR is honestly what got me here. I went to showcases for a long time and my numbers kept improving. Once I found out about the Future Games that was the goal.”

Fox found playing for Team Michigan at the event in Georgia to be a learning experience.

“There are so many guys out there that are good, it was just fun to compete,” Fox explained. “You can see who’s the best from the mental side. You’ve got to just play your game.”

Improved speed has been a focus according to the 30th-rated junior in the state.

“I’ve been trying to get a lot faster and I’ve done that a little bit,” Fox said. “I was in the upper 7s at my first PBR and now I’m 7.1. My velo is also up a little bit.”

There is one area of his game that stands out as much as any in the eyes of Fox.

“I can see myself bringing leadership to college,” Fox pointed out. “That’s something I’m good at. I was the first sophomore varsity captain at Rochester ever. I’m also someone that will drive in runs and not make fielding mistakes.”

The biggest influences on Fox can be found right at home.

“My parents and family in general always pushed me to be the best,” Fox said. “They always told me if you think you can do something, you can. I took that to heart and now I’m a D-I commit.”

That is an accomplishment that Fox takes pride in.

“What a feeling of relief,” Fox said. “All the stress of thinking about what school is the best option is gone. It feels good to know where I’m going.”

Business/marketing/finance will be the major for Fox, a 3.9 student who is looking forward to his days ahead at the university in Athens, 41/2 hours from home.

“The MAC is super competitive and the teams don’t like each other,” concluded Fox, who just turned 16 on Sept. 12. “I’m excited to go there and compete for a starting spot, win games and compete for a championship.”
