Division 2 Team Of The Week: 4th Edition - Freeland

FREELAND - A walk-off victory over defending D-4 state champion Beal City highlighted a four-win week for a youthful Freeland squad, which is being recognized as the Prep Baseball Division 2 Team of the Week.

“We’re a young and athletic team,” noted head coach Justin Davis, whose Falcons are now 18-7 on the season. “We’ve had 12 freshmen or sophomores see varsity action this spring.”

A pair of 10th graders came up big this week for the Falcons, which swept Bay City John Glenn 7-1 and 9-1 before splitting with the number one Division 4 team in Michigan, Beal City, winning 7-6 and losing 5-4. Freeland also split with Cass City, falling 6-5 before a 13-0 triumph to close out the week.

Carter McLaren had a two-hit performance, fanning eight in a complete game victory over John Glenn and also threw five innings against Cass City, permitting one hit while recording six Ks to lead the way this week. For the year the sophomore southpaw is now 5-1 with a 0.72 ERA, setting 35 down on strikes in 29.1 innings.

Another sophomore, Liam Rump, who leads the team in batting this season with a .410 average, had a walk-off single to beat Beal City and now has driven in 14 runs on the year.

Daniel Duley, the ninth-ranked senior left-handed pitcher in Michigan, threw six innings of two-hit ball with nine strikeouts in one win over Glenn. The Oakland commit, who is hitting .361 on the year with 15 RBIs and five doubles, is now 4-3 on the season with a 3.92 ERA, striking out 43 in 30.1 innings.

Sophomore Connor Lasceski is carrying a .371 batting average with a .530 on-base percentage, driving in six runs. Colin Dee, the 36th-rated senior shortstop in the state, is also helping the cause at the plate hitting .344 with four doubles and 19 RBIs.

“With a young group, our key to continued success is to stay consistent and play our best baseball going into June,” explained Davis, whose seventh-rated Falcons are in a three-team race with Frankenmuth and Swan Valley in the Tri-Valley Conference, with a road game against Bridgeport on the schedule this week.
