Division 2 Team Of The Week: 2nd Edition - Gull Lake

RICHLAND - After a slow start to the season Gull Lake has been on a roll, with the only loss following a 2-2 beginning a hard-luck defeat when darkness resulted in a 3-2 lead being reverted back to the last completed inning and with it a 2-0 deficit against Lakeshore.

It has the Prep Baseball Division 2 Team of the Week now standing at 8-3 on the year.

“Coming into the season I expected us to have a very good defense, offense and pitching,” explained head coach Reggie Walters, whose team is now rated sixth in the state. “I thought we would have a chance to compete in the SMAC this year. We have a strong senior leadership group that has taken to heart what it means to lead.

“After an ugly first game against Harper Creek when we had 11 walks and seven errors, the team I expected has shown up. We are now playing good defense and now are swinging the bats like we expected. In order for us to have continued success we have to attack our opponents and give our bats the opportunity to put crooked numbers on the board.”

The past week included a split with D-2 10th-ranked Lakeshore and sweeps of Kalamazoo Central and Plainwell with a number of outstanding performances.

Luke Anderson, the 77th-rated junior in Michigan, threw four scoreless innings while striking out seven in relief against Lakeshore while also going 2-4 at the plate.

Jon Lucki threw five shutout innings versus K-C to improve his ERA to 0.636 while Parker Woodrow, the 20th-ranked junior catcher in the state, picked up a pair of wins pitching in relief.

At the plate, Julian Harris was 6-20 with four doubles and a grand slam. The team’s leadoff hitter, the 32nd-ranked senior in the state who is signed with Western Michigan, leads the Blue Devils with 12 RBIs on the season.

Another hot hitter for Gull Lake is Evan Kaiser, who was an astounding 9-12 with three doubles during the six games last week. Kaiser is the 34th-rated senior outfielder in Michigan.

There is more that stands out to Walters about the team to date.

“We have had a couple sophomore breakouts this year,” Walters said. “Max Markham started the season on the JV team and is now hitting in the three-hole for us. He went 8-for-21 on the week and has been excellent on the mound. Another sophomore, Jacob Palmatier, has not allowed an earned run in 10 innings pitched.”

For the season the Blue Devils have a team ERA of 2.268 heading into a mid-week doubleheader with Battle Creek Lakeview, the 19th-ranked D-1 team in the state on Thursday before going on the road Saturday to face Zeeland East, the sixth-rated team in Michigan in Division 1 and seventh in the Power 25.
