Division 1 Team Of The Week: 6th Edition - Sterling Heights Stevenson

STERLING HEIGHTS - A trip to the west side of the state resulted in three wins over the weekend for Sterling Heights Stevenson, the Prep Baseball Division 1 Team of the Week.

“We are starting to swing to our potential,” noted head coach Joe Emanuele, whose team took two out of three from Grosse Pointe South earlier in the week before traveling to Grand Rapids to play in the Hudson Tournament, resulting in two wins over the hosts sandwiched around a 7-1 victory over Mattawan. “Our goal this season was to compete for the MAC Red championship, win districts and beyond. We have several returning starters so our expectations were high.”

Vance Labrake drove in the winning run and came on in relief to pick up the victory in game two with Grosse Pointe South, while Jake Leonard went 4-5 with a triple and home run, driving in five in the third-game win.

On Friday against Hudsonville, Jordan Miller threw a six-hitter allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts while Scott Leonard had a double and triple. Scott Leonard then tossed a four-hitter allowing no earned runs with seven Ks against Mattawan on Saturday. Carson Sweet and Jake Leonard had three hits apiece. In the weekend finale against Hudsonville, Ty Jenkins surrendered three hits and one walk with five strikeouts in the victory. Scott Leonard had two hits and drove in two while Alex Pierce had a double, sac fly and two RBIs.

“Jordan Miller has pitched very well,” noted Emanuele, whose Titans came in second in the league behind Dakota this season. “He has given us a lift with us dealing with some health issues.”

Healthy or not, the Titans have a roster filled with college commits including Jenkins to Kellogg CC, Brock Savage to Calvin, Cameron Simms to Macomb, Shane Maggard to Spring Arbor and Jacob Turner to Henry Ford. Additionally, three juniors have committed in Scott and Brett Leonard to Eastern Michigan and Pierce to Central Michigan. A trio of 11th-graders are still uncommitted in Jake Leonard, Sweet and Ryan Rumble.

“We just need to continue to work hard and do damage when we have traffic on the bases,” concluded Emanuele, whose ninth-rated D-1 team in the state faces a tough week ahead in D-1 15th-rated Orchard Lake St Mary’s, Power 25 top-ranked Brother Rice and D-4 sixth-rated Cardinal Mooney.
