Division 1 Team Of The Week: 4th Edition - West Bloomfield

WEST BLOOMFIELD - With a league championship and 22 consecutive wins already accomplished, it has certainly been a great season to date for West Bloomfield.

“Nothing has surprised me about the team so far,” related Josh Birnberg, head coach of the Prep Baseball Division 1 Team of the Week. “But I did not expect to win 22 straight and clinch the league before the Seaholm series.”

That three-game series is this week, but the Lakers have already won the league with a 12-0 Oakland Activities Association White Division record to go along with a 23-1 overall mark.

“We felt like we had a strong team with a lot of experience,” explained Birnberg, whose team went 5-0 last week, beating Groves 4-0, 6-3 and 3-2 to go along with 14-1 and 3-2 wins over Ecorse. “I’m glad we accomplished our regular-season goal of winning the league. Our pitching has been outstanding, led by Slade Moore, Stevie Fountain and Myles Sorn.”

Moore, the third-rated junior left-handed pitcher in the state and a Michigan commit, has an ERA of less than 0.50 with a couple of no-hitters so far, while Fountain, the 18th-ranked 2025 right-handed pitcher in the state, “has also been fantastic” according to Birnberg, with an ERA also below 0.50. Sorn “has been amazing” in the eyes of the West Bloomfield coach, with a 1.10 ERA. The 23rd-rated senior right-handed pitcher in Michigan is a Lansing CC signee.

Senior Dylan Jordan had a game-winning two-run single to clinch the league title against Groves last week.

“We have been getting big hits all season,” noted Birnberg, whose squad is ranked third in the state in Division 1.

Jaxson Staph, a Macomb CC commit ranked 15th among senior shortstops in Michigan, is hitting close to .500 and leads the Lakers in RBIs while Cameron Laflamme, the 76th-rated junior in the state, is carrying a .400 average while providing power to the lineup.

“We can’t get too high or too low,” Birnberg concluded. “We have one of the toughest schedules in the state in the month of May. We will need to handle adversity well like we have all year.”
