Sacrifices made in Cavin reaching College Baseball dream at Oakland

Robert Cavin C / RHP / Livonia Stevenson, MI / 2019

LIVONIA - Growing up Bobby Cavin was a two-sport athlete playing football and baseball, where he was a third baseman and pitcher. That has all changed.

“When I played for the Michigan Wildcats my coached moved me to catcher,” Cavin reflected. “I was thinking I’d do that for a couple years but I started getting good at it around 13U, so I thought I’d stick with it.”

The potential to take it to the next level also brought on a more recent change for Cavin.

“This year I decided to sacrifice my senior year of football to follow my dream of playing college baseball,” noted the Livonia Stevenson senior. “I wanted to work out for baseball five days a week and now I’m playing fall ball on the Arsenal with Aaron Wilson (PBR Michigan Scouting Director). It was a big decision not to play football, but I knew I couldn’t take a risk and get injured. I had to make the right choice for me so I could move on in the game of baseball.”

That will happen for the second-ranked senior catcher in the state after a commitment to Oakland.

“They like the way I present myself behind the plate, the way I block, the way I receive and that I have a strong arm,” explained Cavin, who gave credit for much of his exposure to his summer team that helped bring interest from Central Michigan and Grand Valley State as well as his final three choices of Eastern Michigan, Ohio Valley and Oakland. “They like that I have power to all fields and they like my character and leadership on the field.”

The visit to Oakland was memorable for the 6-1 235-pounder.
