Q&A with Marietta College commit: Zak Melcher
February 3, 2013
PBR: Where have you decided to attend college and why did you make this choice?
Melcher: I decided to attend Marietta College because of their prestigious baseball program and academic fields.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Melcher: I was considering Trine University, Hillsdale University, and Kalamazoo prior to my commitment.
PBR: Was distance from home a factor in your decision?
Melcher: Even though I wanted to stay in Michigan, the distance from home didn't play a role in my decision. However, the warmer weather in southeast Ohio will be nice.
PBR: Where did the coaches first see you? How did your relationship develop with their coaching staff?
Melcher:The coaches first saw me through a video that was sent to them by Tom Kologek, the recruiting coordinator from 2SP. My relationship developed after a few visits to the campus and going to their prospect day. I felt like the coaching staff was a good fit for me.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Melcher: As an incoming freshman I think the coaches will expect me to work hard and hopefully become a role player.
PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help your team?
Melcher: I think that my bat is my biggest strength. I feel like that can help my team out by me driving in runs in key situations.
PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most memorable experience from this past summer?
Melcher: I play with the Michigan Jets in the summer; however, last summer I played for the Grosse Pointe Redbirds. My most memorable experience last summer was winning the Gold Glove Classic.
PBR: Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for the team going into your senior season?
Melcher: My goal for my team is to win states and my individual goal is do anything to help my team get there.
PBR: Who is the best player you have played against in the state?
Melcher: Carmen Benedetti (Grosse Pointe South) is the best player I’ve played against in the state.
