Michigan Positional Arms Impress at Midwest Futures

Michigan has fielded a team at the Midwest Futures Games only twice but both years our players have made quite an impression.  In Team Michigan history, albeit a short history, Michigan is 4-0-2 at the Midwest Futures Games. 

Last weekend at Indiana University, Michigan tied a gritty Wisconsin team and knocked off Kentucky and highly touted Indiana. 

From the outset Michigan impressed on the field.  During the workout portion of the Midwest Futures Games the Michigan defensive arm strength was on display.  Tyler Schmidt and Eric Gilgenbach opened things up from the outfield recording 90mph and 89mph velocities respectively. Robbie Jones was not far behind with 88mph from the outfield.

In the infield the impressive display didn't stop with Wyatt Morrison and Riley McCauley both posting 88mph across the diamond from short.  CJ Huntley was 83mph across the diamond and freshman Karl Kauffmann was 86mph across the diamond.

When it was all said and done the Michigan position players, outfielders and infielders only, averaged 86.1mph from their positions.

Not to be outdone, the Michigan catching core of Drew Blakely, Jordyn Muffley, and Trent Theisen were collectively the best catchers at the event. (Admittedly we are a little biased.)  Theisen and Muffley both threw 81mph from the crouch, again ranking them among the best in the event. Freshman Drew Blakely didn't disappoint either popping an 80mph from the crouch.

Although arm strength is not the only measure of a ballplayer it certainly played a roll in Team Michigan's success.  On the weekend Michigan only committed two errors as a team and both of them came in Game 3 against Indiana.
