The final showcase of our preseason circuit was held on March 10 in Windsor at GRB Academy: the Madison Preseason I.D. It’s annually one of the most heavily attended events on our calendar and typically gives us a look at some of the top talent in the entire state in the process. Over 180 prospects made it out and reiterated the fact that the state of Wisconsin baseball is better than ever.

Today, we’ll continue dissecting this event in depth with this tremendous group of infielders. Last week, we broke down the event’s after catchers and outfielders, in case you missed those. Previously, we also offered rapid analysis on the Madison I.D. inside our Quick Hits post and took a look at all of the measured data gathered with our Statistical Analysis.

This group is nothing short of spectacular and contains some of the best talent in the state. With well over 90 participating infielders, it took us some time to sift through the prospects in attendance. We separated the rankings below by class, a top-five ranking for each of the 2020, 2021, and 2022 groups.

At the top of the junior rankings are a pair of Waunakee two-way stand-outs who we expected to be among the best in show and neither disappointed. Joe Hauser and Taiten Manriquez both make it look easy on defense, though Hauser’s impressive hit/power combo has him as one of the best available prospects in the state – and he can really pitch. The do-it-all junior has simply become one of the country’s most coveted prospects without a commitment.

Among the sophomores, Liam Moreno (Sun Prairie) has continued to cement himself as one of the top bats in the Midwest, and he, too, is still on the market. The same can be said about the other four ranked sophomores as well, none of them are committed, either.

TOP 2020 PROSPECTS

1. Joe Hauser, Waunakee, 2020
Body: 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. Strong athletically built two-way talent.
Positional Profile: SS/RHP One of the best available two way talents in the country. Plays with moxy and high baseball instincts.
Run: 6.89 runner in the 60. Athletic gait, easy run.
Hit: RHH. Quiet pre pitch, hitterish in the box with confident presence. Balanced stance, quiet and fluid loading actions with short stride, excellent balance through contact. Path is short to the baseball with slight uphill plane, create lift and backspin, well above average bat speed and strength.
Power: 93 mph exit velocity from the tee. Power potential bat at the next level.
Defense: Natural actions, soft hands, clean exchanges working through the baseball, plus body control.
Arm: RH. INF - 87 mph. Plus HS arm strength, carries well, short loose over the top slot, plays athletic when on the move.

2. Taiten Manriquez, Waunakee, 2020
Body: 6-foot-0, 160-pounds. Lean projectable frame, loose actions.
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Run: 6.92 runner in the 60. Above average run, athletic gait.
Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, short stride, smooth loading actions, maintains good balance through contact. Easy effort, confident approach with above average bat speed. Line drive contact on short path.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Defense: Well above average actions, natural defender with soft hands, fluid footwork and body control.
Arm: RH. INF - 88 mph. Long arm draw, high 3/4 slot, long release.

3. Eduardo Saucedo, Oregon, 2020
Body: 6-foot-0, 180-pounds. Lean proportional frame.
Positional Profile: INF/OF
Run: 7.39 runner in the 60.
Hit: LHH. Loose confident setup, slightly open stance, hanging leg lift trigger, maintains balance through contact. Loose easy swing, path has slight uphill plane, gap to gap approach, occasionally favors pull side.
Power: 86 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Defense: Infield actions play through the baseball, glovework plays out in front, center of body, above average body control. Outfield play works through the baseball in stride, glove plays out in front.

4. Riley Zirbel, Lake Mills, 2020
Body: 5-foot-10, 155-pounds. Athletic frame, fast twitch actions.
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Run: 6.75 runner in the 60. Plus runner, quick light footed.
Hit: RHH. Wide setup, long leg lift stride, loads on the back side, good balance through contact. Slight uphill path, above average bat speed generated by loose hands. Occasional lift approach.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. Above average pop for size.
Defense: Actions showed ability to play through the baseball, average hands, glove work plays out front and open. Flashed body control.

5. Colin Hageman, Janesville Craig, 2020
Body: 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. Athletic build, muscular shape, broad shoulders.
Positional Profile: 2B/SS
Run: 7.01 runner in the 60. Above average runner, quick first step.
Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, wider base, short stride, maintains balance through contact, can get more out of lower half. Line drive contact, fluid hitter, above average bat speed and strength.
Power: 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. Occasional hard contact, gap to gap hitter.
Defense: Actions play through the baseball, fluid footwork, showed soft hands, above average backhand.

TOP 2021 PROSPECTS

1. Liam Moreno, Sun Prairie, 2021
Body: 5-foot-9, 165-pounds. Compact frame and build.
Positional Profile: 3B/SS Moreno is a premium right handed bat in his class with an uncanny feel for the barrel.
Run: 6.91 runner in the 60. Athletic gait, above average runner.
Hit: RHH. Confident presence in the box, open setup, hanging lift stride lands square and on time. Short path, loose hands creates plus bat speed for age. Swings with intent, path gets extension through the baseball, gap to gap approach. Plus feel for the barrel for his age.
Power: 97 mph exit velocity from the tee. Ball jumps off the bat, above average power for age.
Defense: 3B/2B profile, average hands play out front, deliberate actions at times.
Arm: RH. INF - 81 mph. Short arm action, high 3/4 slot, plays with some accuracy. 

2. Owen Washburn, Webster, 2021
Body: 6-foot-0, 170-pounds. Highly projectable, athletic build with strength, broad shoulders trim waist.
Positional Profile: 2B/RHP High ceiling two-way prospect with easy athleticism and bloodlines.
Run: 6.89 runner in the 60. Easy runner, plus athlete.

Body: 6-foot-3, 170-pounds. Long lanky frame, highly projectable.

1. Nick West, Verona, 2022
Body: 6-foot-0, 160-pounds. Advanced frame, strong with lean levers, projects.
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP Legitimate SH bat that projects at a corner in the middle of a lineup.
Run: 7.56 runner in the 60.
Hit: SH. Athletic and natural setup from both sides of the plate, tall and slightly open, short stride, maintains balance. Loose easy swing, short path works gap to gap approach, showed ability to work the middle of the field from both sides of the plate.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. Hard contact from both sides.
Defense: Third base type profile, hands play soft, fluid footwork and clean exchanges, actions work through the baseball and showed ability to play athletically on the slow roller.
