Inside the Recruitment: '17 OF Andrew Beitel commits to Adrian College
Andrew Beitel, Sterling Heights, 2017, OF
PBR: Why did you choose Adrian College?
Andrew: I chose Adrian College because of not only their success as a baseball program, but their great academics as well. Adrian College has won 8 straight conference championships and that's something I want to be a part of. I wanted to pick a college where I knew I could come in and compete for a national title right away. The campus is beautiful, as well as the facilities and benefits Adrian provides for their athletes. Coach Rainey does a great job at conditioning and training his players to get to the professional level and to compete for championships, and that's what I like best.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Andrew: Other schools I was considering were Siena Heights University, Rochester College, Hillsdale College, Central Michigan University, Henry Ford Community College, Schoolcraft College, Cleary University, Calvin College, Ecclasia College, Mott Community College, Hope College, Jackson Community College, Flagler College, and the University of Northwestern Ohio.
PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you?
Andrew: The coaching staff first saw me when I was playing at Adrian College for a tournament in early June.
PBR: What team do you play for in the summer and what is your most memorable moment.
Andrew: In the summer, I play for the Oakland Whitecaps under coach Mike Harris. I really don't have a top memorable moment but I remember dog piling on a walk off single at Adrian which was really great. A lot of the kids on the team were new so after that moment we all became really close.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?
Andrew: My expectations for the recruiting process was that it was not going to be easy. I wanted to get the top colleges to show interest in me, but I knew that was going to take a lot of conditioning in the weight room, as well as the cages. If you want to get recruited, you have to get your name out there. Make video, attend showcases, and grow relationships with the coaches by emailing and calling them very frequently.
PBR: What were your stats last spring season?
Andrew: My stats weren't as good as I wanted them to be and that's because I was thinking too much about my stats and how good they'd have to be to play college ball. They weren't bad at all, they just weren't as good as I know they can be. A tip of advice is to not think about your average or the coaches that are watching you when you're at the plate or in the field. If you do, that will mess up your whole rhythm and you'll probably find yourself in a slump.
PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher that you have faced?
Andrew: The toughest pitcher I faced was a kid from Ohio Elite who was committed to Ball State. He was put in relief and was throwing low to mid-90s.
