Luke Sleeper, LHP, Haslett HS, Class of 2016

PBR: Why did you choose Stanford?

Sleeper: Stanford has an exceptional history of success in the baseball program, and they really develop their players so they have the best chance to win while also getting them ready for the next level. The academics at Stanford are unprecedented as well, and the opportunities they can provide me after baseball is really what made the difference.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Sleeper: I had interest from plenty of schools, but Michigan State was really the only other school that I seriously considered.

PBR: How much did playing west play a part in your decision?

Sleeper: It played a huge part. The weather in California, the Bay Area especially is unbelievable and great for baseball. Being able to be outside all year round will be exciting. I was born in San Luis Obispo, California and spent the first few years of my life there as well so it feels like I am going back home in a sense.

PBR: Stanford is a very prestigious school academically.  How much of a challenge will it be to balance both academics and athletics at the same time?

Sleeper: It will definitely be a challenge, but I am looking forward to it. I’ll be learning from some of the best and most respected professors in the world alongside the brightest students from across the globe. I think it will motivate me to work hard both in and out of the classroom.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this summer?

Sleeper: I play for the Michigan Bulls under Sean Gallagher. Our team played in the NABF World Series in Struthers, OH towards the end of the season, and there was a home run derby that one of our teammates competed in. He did really well and everyone from all the teams were having a blast so that was cool. We also played in some really exciting games and had a few walk-off wins and those are always fun as well.

PBR:  What person has the greatest impact on your baseball career and why?

Sleeper: My dad has definitely had the biggest impact on my baseball career. He was the one who always found me the best opportunities to succeed and really showed me how to work hard and do things the right way. He’s been alongside me in the journey the entire way and I wouldn’t be where I am without his help and guidance.

PBR: What were your stats this spring season?

Sleeper: I was 3-5 with a 3.28 ERA with 83 strikeouts in 49 1/3 IP.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter that you have faced?

Sleeper: I’ve faced plenty great hitters, but a guy that stands out for me is Avery Maurer from St. Johns.  He is a really tough guy to get out and also has the ability to go deep.
