Inside the Recruitment: '15 1B Grant Steinborn commits to Davenport
January 28, 2015
Grant Steinborn, 1B, New Lothrop, Class of 2015
PBR: Why did you choose Davenport?
Steinborn: The main reason is the coaches. They’re experienced and “bleed baseball”. They have built a winning program that is nationally ranked. Davenport has outstanding facilities which are new. I’ll have the opportunity to contribute immediately. It’s a great fit for me.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Steinborn: IPFW, Northwood, Concordia, Western Michigan, Oakland, Indiana Tech.
PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you?
Steinborn: We starting communicating during our high school playoff run. They watched the games on video. Later, I saw them at several showcases.
PBR: What team do you play for in the summer and what is your most memorable moment?
Steinborn: My most memorable moment is winning the 2014 State Championship. I play summer ball with the Oakland Reds-a great group of players and coaches. My favorite memories with the Reds are the Best of the Great Lakes championship game at U of M, and the Freedom Classic Semi Final game at Notre Dame.
PBR: Davenport has a beautiful baseball stadium. How much of a role did that play in your decision?
Steinborn: Coaching was the major reason. The new stadium and clubhouse are certainly an added bonus. It’s a top notch facility.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?
Steinborn: I was expecting to be a pitcher but most schools recruited me for my hitting. In college, I will be a first baseman. The recruiting process was more complicated & intense than I expected, and I should have attended more camps in my junior year.
PBR: What were your stats last spring season?
Steinborn: Hitting: .420 average, 40 rbi’s, 31 runs scored, .498 OB%, .601 SLG, 4 strikeouts. Pitching: 14 – 1 record .98 era, 93 strikeouts,12 earned runs, 84 innings. 2 No hitters
PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher that you have faced?
Steinborn: Brandon Murray out of Indiana. He throws in the mid 90’s. He’s now pitching at South Carolina.
