Cameron Mallegg OF / C / Grosse Pointe South, MI / 2020Rankings StateRank: 16 / POS: 4
GROSSE POINTE - From winning the state baseball championship last June at Grosse Pointe South to participating in front of nearly 300 scouts at the Future Games in August, 2018 was a memorable year for Cam Mallegg. It all helped lead up to the highlight of 2019 for the 16th-rated 2020 in the state - a commitment to Butler. “I knew I was interested in possibly going there the middle of last summer,” Mallegg said of Butler. “I emailed them before the Future Games and the coach saw me there and followed me at every game. In the middle of December I took a visit.” The fourth-ranked junior outfielder in Michigan liked what he saw. “The biggest thing for me is feeling like it was a good fit for me personally,” Mallegg reflected. “I like the smaller-school feel along with a good baseball program. The coach is a great guy. I thought it would be a great home for me to thrive athletically, academically and socially. I knew it was where I should be.” The Butler coaching staff sees Mallegg fitting into the Big East program. “They really like my hustle …, my hustle off the field,” Mallegg noted. “They like that I play hard all the time. But the first thing that stood out was my pure athleticism.” A 6.61 time in the 60 along with a 94 exit velo is more than appealing to any Division I school. “They want me as an outfielder and that’s what I want to play,” explained the 5-10 180-pounder, who has also seen time at catcher. “I’m more than willing to play anywhere, but outfield is best fitted for me with my speed.” |
