The class of 2013 rankings look a little bit different today as former No. 10 Alex Maloney (Chelsea HS) has recently moved to Indiana. Maloney, the son of Ball State head coach Rich Maloney, has transferred to Delta HS near Muncie, IN to finish his senior year.
With Rich Maloney being introduced as the head coach for the Cardinals on June 22nd, it was widely speculated that Alex would follow his family, but that was not the case. Alex stayed at Chelsea HS for the first trimester and played his final football season for the Bulldogs.
When asked about his decision to stay he responded, "I wanted to stay for my senior season to be with all of my friends, but, ultimately, being away from my family played a big part in my decision to move down to be with them."
Without question, being away from family took its toll. Maloney had to make a difficult decision. "I felt that I needed to be close to my family in the end. My teammates knew mid-way through football season that I was thinking about leaving, and I made it official at the end of the trimester."
As for his new state and new high school, Maloney will be joining a talented group of players at Delta HS including Indiana State recruit Nick Belzer. Maloney, who has signed with Ball State, helped lead Chelsea HS to a state quarterfinal appearance in 2012. Maloney has been up to 88mph on the mound, is a tough hard-nosed player on defense and will certainly contribute to his new team.
As for the Bulldogs of Chelsea, they will have some big shoes to fill moving forward.
