Unsigned Senior Games: Catcher Analysis

Over 30 players from across the Old Line State, Delaware, and Virginia, participated in this year's PBR Maryland Unsigned Senior Games at McCurdy Field in Frederick. Players were put through a pro-style workout and played a game in front of our PBR Maryland scouting staff with Trackman and Blast also on hand to record data. Below are evaluations on the four catchers from the event.

Charlie Canapp C / OF / North Harford, MD / 2021
Body: 5’11’’, 190 pounds. Strong, physical, athletic frame. Hit: RHH. Hits from an open stance at the plate with a small leg kick load, creating hand separation and getting to a strong launch position. Really stays behind the ball well with a short uphill swing path. Hands are quick to the ball with fast bat speed through the zone. Stays on the ball through contact with strong lower half involvement. Great extension and one-handed finish. Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Strength present in the swing with power to the middle and pull-side. Arm: RH. C - 79 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Ball showed carry to the bag on throws down to second. Defense: Showed quick footwork and catch and release. Squares shoulders to the target and throws were accurate to the bag with pop times ranged 1.93 - 2.04. Run: 7.31 60-yard time.

Body: 5’6’’, 165 pounds. Strong, athletic body type. Hit: RHH. Hits from a square stance at the plate with a quick, small leg kick load. Hands pre-set in hitting position during load. Works short to the ball with a compact, slightly uphill swing path. Barrel stayed long in the zone and showed quick hands and fast bat speed to contact. Stays behind the ball with a strong lower half and full two-handed finish. Middle to pull-side approach. Power: 94 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Strength present in the swing with power to the pull-side. Arm: RH. OF - 83 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid three-quarter slot from the outfield. C - 76 mph. Full arm circle, higher three-quarter slot. Defense: OF. Aggressive and plays through the ball in the outfield. Showed quick footwork and transfers from the glove to throwing hand. Ball showed some carry to the plate. C. Pop times ranged 2.08 - 2.25. Quick out of the crouch gaining ground on throws to second base. Run: 7.07 60-yard time.

Zach Stanley C / 2B / Colonel Richardson, MD / 2021
Body: 5’8’’, 170 pounds. Athletic frame. Hit: RHH. Hits from a slightly open stance at the plate with a leg kick load. Hands have a tendency to leak away from body. Stays short to the ball with a compact swing and level swing path. Hands are quick through the zone generating some bat speed through contact. Mostly two-handed finish and middle of the field line drive approach. Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Occasional pop. Arm: RH. C - 75 mph. Throws with short arm action from a mid three-quarter slot. Defense: Pop times ranged 2.02 - 2.09. Squares shoulders to target and gains ground on throws to second base. Quick transfer from glove to throwing hand. Throws were accurate to the bag. Run: 7.56 60-yard time.

Gavin Swaney C / OF / Walkersville , MD / 2021
Body: 5’10’’, 174 pounds. Athletic frame with strength. Hit: RHH. Hits from a square stance at the plate with a quiet load and balanced stride. Stays short and aggressive to the ball with a level swing path. Showed quick hands and fast bat speed through the zone. Stays down hard on the ball through contact with some lower half involvement. Gets extension past contact with a one-handed finish. Middle to pull-side line drive approach. Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Strength present in the swing with pop to the middle and pull-side. Arm: RH. C - 71 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Pop times ranged 2.03 - 2.10. Quick footwork and catch and release. Gains ground on throws to second and throws showed accuracy to the bag. Run: 7.75 60-yard time.
