Spring Forward: Teams to Watch
1. Loyola Blakefield
Don't think the Dons historic 2017 season was a fluke; led by division I commits Will Glock (Maryland), AJ Holcomb (High Point), and Matthew Wyatt (Virginia), Loyola Blakefield has a talented core that will give them the change to repeat again in 2018.
2. Riverdale Baptist
A new look team in 2018 after losing state player of the year Harold Cortijo. Riverdale still have stars Jose Rivera, Corey Rosier (Chipola), IF Ben Blackwell (Dayton) and OF Matthew Day (Coppin State) and include new additions to the squad with transfers OF Trendon Craig, RHP/1B Marcus Brown (UMES), UT/RHP Darius Gilliam (Southern) and IF Jordan Peyton (Radford). The Crusaders shouldn't miss a beat and again be a top team in the state.
3. DeMatha Catholic
Though the stags did lose some strong players on their roster from 2017, they still boast top players in the 2019 class in IF/RHP Thomas Keehn (Duke) and C/1B Clark Burroughs, and the top two players in the 2020 class in OF/RHP Alex Greene (Virginia), and C Jack Bulger (Vanderbilt).
4. St. Michaels
The defending 1A state champs return a lot of their roster from the 2017 although it will be tough to replace LHP/1B Noah Brack, C Tucker Heinlein, and CJ Chansler. RHP/OF Matt Grogan (Salisbury) will step into the role of staff ace and Nick Newnam is one of the top hitters in the state. The Saints should again battle for a title in 2018.
5. Poolesville
The defending 3A state champs return their big three in Brady Pearre (High Point), Ryan Haddaway (Mount St. Mary's), and Matthew Convers (St. Mary's College MD). A surprise team in 2017, Poolesville will not sneak up on anyone in 2018.
6. Calvert Hall
A perennial top team in the MIAA A conference, the Cardinals will be paced offensively by OF JP Murphy (High Point), who has been a staple in the lineup since his sophomore season. Highly talented new players should step into key roles and/or see larger roles in 2018 such as RHP Dan O'Connor (Maryland), C Parker Landwehr (Boston College), and IF Dominic Freeberger (UNC Asheville) . Calvert Hall should again compete for a MIAA championship in 2018
